Chevrolet Performance Launches New L8P Crate Engine: Video

Way back in December 2022, Chevrolet Performance launched a crate version of the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine found in the Silverado HD and Sierra HD pickup trucks. As the only Gen V Chevy Small Block powerplant to feature an iron block, the L8T is a popular offering for boost-hungry folks. That being said, the Bow Tie brand’s performance department has released a new variant of the L8T, dubbed the L8P.

At first glance, it may be tough to spot the differences between the two engines. Indeed, the L8P shares many of the defining characteristics of the L8T, including a total displacement of 400 cubic inches – or about 6.6 liters – thanks to a cylinder bore of 4.060 inches (103.25 mm) and cylinder stroke of 3.860 inches (98 mm). However, where the L8P diverges from its L8T brethren lies in the valvetrain.

6.6L V8 L8P

The L8P powerplant features a unique camshaft based on the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 LT2 gasoline engine found in the Corvette Stingray. In order to accommodate the special camshaft, the pistons, valves, and cylinder heads are tweaked from the L8T. All told, the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8P gasoline engine features a higher rev limit than the L8T at 6,000 rpm and churns out a GM-claimed 523 horsepower and 543 pound-feet of torque. For comparison’s sake, the L8T is rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque in crate engine form.

It’s worth noting that the L8P requires a minimum of premium unleaded fuel – or 91 octane – while the L8T is content with regular 87-octane gasoline.

By combining the heavy-duty durability of the Silverado HD and Sierra HD trucks with the all-out performance of the C8 Stingray, Chevrolet Performance has created a powerplant that is capable of satisfying many horsepower-hungry enthusiasts. With that in mind, what’s the first vehicle you would swap this engine into, dear reader? Let us know in the comment section below!
