Fully Electric 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580 Debuts As Cadillac Escalade IQ Rival

Mercedes-Benz has electrified the G-Wagen, serving up the all-new 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580. The new G 580 brings with it the same iconic boxy shape, luxury-laden interior, and off-road-ready capabilities as the ICE-powered G-Wagen, but with a generous helping of all-electric propulsion technology under the skin. The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580 is expected to launch later this year or early 2025, serving as a rival to the Cadillac Escalade IQ and GMC Hummer EV SUV.

At the heart of the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580 is an all-electric EQ Technology powertrain juiced by a 116-kWh lithium-ion battery. The battery is integrated directly within the ladder frame of the vehicle, contributing to a lower center of gravity and enhancing both stability and handling. Propulsion is generated by a quartet of electric motors, which deliver a combined output of 579 horsepower and 859 pound-feet of torque, sending the SUV from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds.

As expected, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 promises impressive off-road capabilities, which are bolstered by features like Low Range off-road gear reduction and virtual differential locks enabled through intelligent torque vectoring. The G 580 also boasts the ability to climb gradients up to 100 percent and navigate lateral slopes of 35 degrees, while offering a max fording depth of 33.5 inches.

Inside, the G 580 brings with it a long list of luxury features. The MBUX infotainment system incorporates dual 12.3-inch displays as standard, while advanced driver-assistance systems like Active Steering Assist, Active Brake Assist, and Active Emergency Stop Assist are all standard as well.

Design-wise, the G 580 maintains the iconic aesthetics of the classic G-Class while adding a few subtle elements tailored to the all-electric propulsion system, such as a slightly raised hood for improved aerodynamics and special “air curtains” that optimize air flow around the vehicle.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580 is poised to hit the U.S. exclusively as the Edition One special edition trim, which includes its own range of expanded standard equipment and design elements. Pricing is expected to start at a hefty $180,000.

  • That cutesy front end makes it 100% impossible to get away from the Power Wheels aura that permeates the entire vehicle. So sorry.

  • So MB is asking for $180K for this loaded-up special edition model that can go only 240 miles per charge based on sources I read? The IQ is more than enough reason to buy or lease over the G 580 electric but outside of the special edition models, how much lower will the regular electric models asking prices will start?

  • So it not only looks like a 1970s washing machine, but now you can plug it like one too!

  • Maybe Cadillac should show a boxy concept Escalade variant. Same over at no direction Ford. Lincoln needs a Bronco variant to compete with MB. One was to happen years ago but nothing came of it.
