Production Restarts At GM Alvear Plant In Argentina

After experiencing two full months of downtime at its Argentine factory, General Motors has just resumed regular production at the GM Alvear plant in Argentina.

On Monday, March 4th, the automaker resumed series production at the GM Alvear plant, located in the city of Rosario, province of Santa Fe, Argentina. The Alvear complex reopened its doors and resumed manufacturing activities after having been closed since December 29th, 2023, for a total of two months and five days of forced inactivity.

Notably, the GM Alvear plant has just begun its first week of series production for the 2024 calendar year, after overcoming the longest period of inactivity that GM’s Argentine factory has suffered so far due to multiple economic problems in the country that have prevented it from operating normally. In fact, the complex had already gone through a series of interruptions and suspensions during the second half of last year.

The recent and systematic production difficulties of the GM Alvear plant are due to the shortage of components for the assembly of vehicles at the facility, a result of the debt of local auto parts manufacturers and the company itself with foreign suppliers – who suspended the shipment of parts due to lack of payments. This situation was generated by the severe shortage of foreign currency in Argentina and affects several manufacturers in the South American country.

Although the company has not yet officially communicated details about the restart of operations at the GM Alvear plant, the production rate is estimated to be low to manage the limited amount of auto parts it was able to acquire to start assembly this year. As such, this implies that the facility will most likely operate on a single shift and well below its installed production capacity, at least for the time being.

The Argentine GM Alvear plant resumed series production on Monday and assembled this year’s first Chevy Tracker units, the only vehicle manufactured at the facility following the end of local production of the Chevy Cruze in December. The Tracker produced at the Alvear plant is sold in the domestic market of Argentina and is mainly exported to Colombia.
