Upcoming Cadillac Optiq Is More Midsize Than Compact

Last week, GM Authority exclusively covered the upcoming Cadillac Optiq’s image leak in China. Although the future sub-Lyriq crossover was expected to be an EV equivalent in size to the entry-level Cadillac XT4, the Optiq is actually more midsize than compact.

The upcoming Cadillac Optiq data sheet leaked by the Asian country’s authorities reveals that Cadillac’s second all-electric crossover is really bigger than many of us expected, with a body that is more midsize than compact, eye-catching and very revealing in the brand’s growing family of electric utility vehicles. In fact, the Optiq’s dimensions not only exceed those of the Cadillac XT4, but also those of the Cadillac XT5.

Upcoming Cadillac Optiq in brand's crossover portfolio - Exterior Dimensions
XT4 XT5 Optiq Lyriq
Wheelbase (in./mm) 109.4 / 2780 112.5 / 2857 116.3 / 2954 121.8 / 3094
Length (in./mm) 181.1 / 4600 189.6 / 4815 189.8 / 4822 196.7 / 4996
Width (in./mm) 74.1 / 1880 74.9 / 1903 75.3 / 1912 77.8 / 1976
Height (in./mm) 64.1 / 1630 65.9 / 1675 64.7 / 1644 63.9 / 1623

In particular, the official future product statement from the SAIC-GM joint venture states that the Cadillac Optiq measures 189.8 inches in length, 75.3 inches in width, and 64.7 inches in height, while resting on a 116.3-inch wheelbase. As such, the all-new Optiq ranks well above the compact-sized Cadillac XT4 and is slightly bigger than the current XT5 – 0.2 inches longer and 0.4 inches wider than the midsize crossover.

While electric vehicles are redefining traditional segments and are often larger than their internal combustion counterparts, the Cadillac Optiq’s more midsize than compact dimensions give us a better idea of its role and positioning in the brand’s product strategy. What’s more, they reveal that there’s room enough for at least one more model below it in Cadillac’s electric crossover lineup.

In any case, the all-new Cadillac Optiq is a new member of the zero-emissions portfolio and will sit below the Cadillac Lyriq in the family. The Optiq stands out for embracing its own interpretation of Cadillac’s new design language, with a highly sculpted front end that includes a smaller grille panel and large boomerang-shaped full-LED headlamps. The side and rear also have unique styling elements that give it its own personality.

The upcoming Cadillac Optiq will make its global debut sometime in the second half of this year and is already confirmed for a commercial launch during that period in China, where it will be manufactured at the automaker’s new Wuhan Ultium Center factory to supply the local market. The Optiq is also expected to be manufactured at a North American plant for commercialization in that region and other international markets around the world.

    • By October, GM will formally announce the electric Equinox, so GM Authority can add its dimensions and of the Blazer to this table. Or just publish a table of all the electric vehicles in this group.

  • I am just not feeling this as an upscale design like I do with the Lyriq.
Like I said I will wait until the High Res images or to see it in person but I am not feeling this one as of right now.

  • To my eyes, I think the upper ‘grille’ area should have been more dominant (take up more space, vertically) on the front end. But I guess that ship has sailed…

  • "As such, the all-new Optiq ranks well above the compact-sized Cadillac XT4 and is slightly bigger than the current XT5 – 0.2 inches longer and 0.4 inches wider than the midsize crossover."

You left out 1.2 inches *shorter*.

  • I've never seen a Lyriq on the roads (and doubt I will for quite some time), so I have no idea how to judge the size of this. I thought the Lyriq was Blazer-sized but guess not. You'd think a compact would be next as it's the largest segment.

    • I have seen and entered the Cadillac Lyriq at a local dealer, and it is BIG. You cannot sense the size until you get inside.

  • Sure would be nice if GM management would wake up and STOP investing in China! GM could lower the prices here instead of paying China for things we don't need and most don't want. Tomg

    • GM & Shanghai GM might as well be seperate companies. What is spent in China doesn't effect spending in the US.
Typically I consider China a raw deal with joint ventures and falling market share for non Chinese car manufacturers but, since GM gave up Europe, it needs a foriegn market with top tier pricing which Latin America can't provide.

      • GM has said they plan to re-enter Europe with their EV only approach.

They pulled out because they just didn’t have a lineup there that could meet EU emissions rules affordably.

Get out, get rid of their dealers, and re-enter with a direct sales EV only approach.

    • China requires products sold in China to be built in China. China plants to date have built nothing for export PERIOD

  • Yes sure....a Blazer with different front and rears and lights......but Equinox and Blazer EVs now, out the door, mass volume....now....I'm tired of waiting with my 2014.
