GM is currently developing the next-generation Chevy Equinox and the next-generation GMC Terrain, both of which are expected to arrive for the 2025 model year, per previous GM Authority coverage. Now, GM Authority has gained insight into the platform that will underpin these next-gen crossovers.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the next-generation 2025 Chevy Equinox and next-generation 2025 GMC Terrain will both continue to ride on the GM D2 platform, similar to the current models. That said, the GM D2 architecture set to underpin the next-gen models will differ from the GM D2 architecture that underpins the current-generation models, with the GM D2 architecture that underpins the next-gen models updated to incorporate elements of the GM VSS-F vehicle set.
Technically speaking, the GM VSS-F vehicle set isn’t a vehicle architecture, but rather an approach to component sharing within the GM umbrella that is specific to ICE-powered vehicles. With that in mind, it’s correct to say that the next-gen 2025 Chevy Equinox and next-gen 2025 GMC Terrain will continue to ride on the GM D2 platform, but the platform will be updated with elements of the GM VSS-F vehicle set.
This approach is similar to the approach that GM applied to the 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon, both of which introduce fresh third generations for their respective nameplates. As GM Authority covered previously, both pickups ride on an updated version of the 31XX platform known internally at GM as 31XX-2, which GM considers to be “all-new,” but similar in design to the 31XX platform used prior to the trucks’ third-gen overhaul.
As for the 2025 Chevy Equinox, the program code used will be D2UC-2, with “D2” referencing the D2 platform, “U” referencing the utility vehicle (crossover / SUV) body style, “C” referencing the Chevrolet brand, and “2” referencing the second generation. Meanwhile, the 2025 GMC Terrain program code will be D2UG-2, with the only difference being “G” in reference to the GMC brand.
Although one could argue that the D2 platform is a “carry-over” for the next-gen crossovers, the 2025 Chevy Equinox and 2025 GMC Terrain will not be “old” or “sub-par” by any means. Rather, both are expected to be very competitive and, in many respects, class-leading, with new sheet metal, all-new interiors, a new powertrain, and the latest tech features. However, sources tell GM Authority that, at this point, there’s simply no reason to make an all-new platform for these vehicles.
Both models are expected to hit production at the end of the 2024 calendar year at the GM San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico.
As a reminder, the next-gen 2025 Chevy Equinox has already been spied one more than one occasion. GM Authority was also the first to report that the next-gen Chevy Equinox would offer a more rugged Activ trim level.

Good, vehicle redesign always drives down GM's already poor reliability. Maybe we won't have to wait for the last model year for decent reliability.
We have a 2019 Equinox that has never had an issue I just sold a 1998 Corvette and a 2013 Tahoe that never had an issue I have a 2022 Tahoe premier along with a 2022 loaded Corvette all that have never had an issue. I have been driving only GM since 1966 I have never had any type of powertrain issues or for that matter no issues of any kind. I have no idea what you're talking about.
Pick up a copy of Consumer Reports from any year and you will know what I am talking about. Having worked at GM I have owned 15 to 20 vehicles and my anecdotal evaluation is CR is not wrong. The last year of a model is often the highest rated for reliability of that model.
I a long time ago learned not to give Consumer Reports ratings of autos any value. They can knock a vehicle down for the silliest reasons.
I spent twenty years a GM and never had an issue.
Consumer Reports hates GM.
In case you didn't figure it out, Consumer Reports is really good at TESTING TOASTERS !
Good grief! You go by CR ratings? CR has the same reliability ratings for new modern GM vehicles as the same for old late 70's early 80's GM models. Nah bro you bringing up Consumer Reports as the source for your opinion on GM vehicles actually kills your credibility here.
i have seen several market research studies in my days and the number one reason customers give for buying a Toyota is always reliability. Whether you and I believe CR reliability data or even if it's totally wrong is irrelevant, customers use their data. Also improving CR reliability scores can be done. Subaru, Mazda, Hyundai and others have pulled themselves from the ditch by making reliability a priority. Something GM has been unwilling to do.
Patrick: First, let's get one thing out in the open now. Toyota sells as many vehicles as they do because most (nearly all) people buying them are sheep. On top of that, Toyota does a remarkable job of marketing. It's certainly not because their products are better.
You mention both Mazda and Subaru next. Mazda is better than Subaru, but not by much and I haven't met one person who has turned in a Subaru that liked the car. I've taken around 15 of them (lease company returns) in just the past 4 months and every one gave them issues with large ($3000 on up) repair bills. They have been so bad that the companies refuse to buy more of them.
I think you would be doing yourself a favor by looking at initial quality vs. long term reliability.
Toyota is the largest selling vehicle company in the world for one reason, they offer the most reliable cars to the sheep and that's what the sheep want. Every company has good initial quality now days, GM included, but IQ is no longer a differentiator. I will grant you that customers who lease don't care much about out of warranty reliability, but customers who buy definitely do. This is most apparent is the resale value difference in brands.
It's been said on here before and deserves to be said again. McDonald's sells the most hamburgers world-wide. But that doesn't make them the best in any way. Likewise, just because Toyota sells so many products (keeping in mind that Toyota counts anything they produce with an engine as a sale, such a industrial equipment, etc) doesn't make them the best.
Consumer Reports are not reliable today. They are surveyed only for owners who have purchased the vehicle for only 12 months and cannot confirm the true durability of the car in this process. The Hyundai and Kia vehicles were well received at Consumer Reports, but a few years later, their vehicles were recalled on a large scale due to severe engine defects and low durability, resulting in an overwhelming number of car fires.
When you think about it the most likely that are going to answer their evaluations are people that are having more problems than normal with their vehicles whereas ones that are satisfied are less likely to reply to a questionnaire...just saying like every other survey you have to know who is responding and not always take it as gospel
Consumer Reports can't really claim impartiality anymore. There was a time they had a legal team that chased down anyone using CR ratings on display in ANY form of advertising. It was even to the point they made trouble for mom and pop appliance stores that had copies of CR to show customers that the XYZ-O-Matic was the best washing machine.
Now, one finds their survey information on AutoBlog, or ratings being freely used in advertising, and not just for cars.
Combine this with their new bit of having raffle, drawings, and contests, I conclude they are not what they claim to be.
Your thoughts may vary.
I have been driving new GM's since Dec 1973, and have had 40 new vehicles , half were privately owned , half were fleet company cars, all were GM
Today , we have 2016 Colarado Z71 , 2011 Cruze LTZ RS , a 2020 Equinox AWD 2.0l mid-night . We will replace the Colarado with a 2023-24 Colarado when we can place our order this spring.
The quality of GM has continued to improve and i have not experienced any of the issues you speak of , We also have a 2019 Equinox , it now has 200k and is working great . The Cruze and the Colarado we bought within 12 months of launch and obviously they have not had issues or we would not still have them.
Longevity and trouble free ownership is all about how you take care of your vehicle, regular routine maintenance , oil changes, wheel rotation, fluid changes, and brake service, etc will keep you car running like new!!
Patrick: C.R.?? Really?
I'll refer you to a true source of accurate information from JD Power. Unlike CR which attains much of it's information from subscribers only and then relies on the subjective opinions of people who work for them (IE the get paid by CR), JD Power actually gets their info from the owners like you and I.
Although GM has gotten "better" in CR, the info you will get from JD Power is more accurate and reliable. Oh, and GM is and has been doing very well in both IQS and LTR with JD Power.
I suspect most of the commenters in here are like me and getting an employee discount to buy their GM's. But most customers do not, and like it or not they do use CR as the number one reference for vehicle reliability. I will agree reliability has improved, but still runs consistently below average. Initial Quality for GM is great thanks to the Manufacturing Engineers and the assembly plants. Reliability? the out-of-warranty stuff customers pay for, still below average. All I am saying is carrying over much of the Equinox is a good thing for reliability. GM suffers a quality hit with every vehicle major they do.
Patrick: I did work at a GM dealer/dealerships for about 15 of my 22 years in this business. In fact, the first 12 years was with the same Buick, Cadillac, GMC and Honda dealership starting in 1988. Guess what? In those years of experience, the Buick's were better than the Honda's. More refined. Better in many ways.
Anyhow, I no longer work for a GM store and I have been at a Volvo/Mazda store for the past 7 years. I've had new cars from Kia, VW, Ford, Lincoln, Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep. I've had used cars from Jaguar and Mercedes Benz. What do I choose to drive again today? A GM because of them all, my GM cars have always been the most reliable. Second were the Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge products.
So you are saying the C8, and Tahoe, both majors, are pieces of junk? When someone has trouble learning the screen to adjust the heater CR rates the vehicle as not reliable. Poor reliability is when your car quits running and has to be towed. I don't know anyone that has had a new GM vehicle that needed to be towed. I have a feeling GM walked you out and now you have a chip on your shoulder.
CR claims they buy everything they test and rate. so do you think with a few thousand subscribers they have the finances to purchase everything they claim to have tested? my thinking is they are a phony anti-American left-wing bunch of transvestites.............
Wow jack!! Your comment was going well and I actually agreed with it until that last sentence. Rather ignorant and wrong in so many ways. By the way, learn to use caps where appropriate. What are you, 7 years old?
yea Joe ... my wife bought a new Buick Verana on May 14, 2012, has 115K at present, darn thing had to have a new battery recently....other than that couple sets of tires... really unreliable huh?
G.M. can start with putting a comfortable drivers side seat in those two models. Fine for women and people well under six feet tall. And no knee room to speak of. In most other aspects they are pretty decent haulers.
"I have no idea what you’re talking about."
It's likely he doesn't either. I have more or less abandoned GM, but that abandonment comes from either a lack of product that is comfortable, or - recently - their inability to deliver a vehicle with all parts present and accounted for. 'The dealer will retrofit it' goes nowhere with me, because no one says WHEN. Other manufacturers offer complete vehicles delivered in a timely manner.
Certainly frustrating but this is definitely not a GM-only issue. Every automaker is dealing with the fallout of the global supply chain collapse.
Some are fairing better than others but it’s bleak out there for everyone.
GM’s approach is to get the vehicle to the customer as quickly as possible even if it’s missing non-essential parts or semi-conductors.
The alternative is having that car sitting in some parking lot for months on end and a customer potentially without a vehicle.
How 'bout some real news concern'n the Elect Equinox, you chumps....!
While a refresh and ICE engine are nice, sadly it likely be stuck with the tiny 1.5L 4cyl. Would like to see these vehicles get a v6 again like my current 2015 Terrain. I won't hold my breath though since this will presumably be the last ICE gen anyway.
I have a 2019 Equinox Red Line edition with the 2.0L 253 HP engine it's a rocket ship. I would not want the 1.5L 175 HP engine which is the only engine available. GM has been putting high horse-powered engines in everything lately but then they downsize it in the Equinox.
The 2.0 is a great engine. However, most people don’t want to buy premium gas.
I have never put premium in it it runs great premium is recommended the manual says you can run 87 gas which may reduce power and gas mileage. It's super fast with regular and gets great gas mileage.
I was concerned about it like you until so I checked that out before we bought it. I have a 22 C8 that takes premium and a 22 Tahoe that takes regular with the 5.3 engine I did not want the 6.2 option because it only takes premium and at 13 MPG it sucks a lot of fuel.
We've heard this news before but my big issue is why do we have to wait so long for this vehicle when new generations of other crossovers are already out. This vehicle should debut not too much longer after the EV Equinox.
I work at a salvage yard and we can't keep the equinox motor in stock most go before 120km and the manifolds all crack yet they keep taking your money for poorly built motors
Which engine? The late 3.6, which has been gone for probably 5 years now was their best engine.
I owned a Gmc terrian 1.5l 2022 suv .
It is a good car to drive .I like gmc .
The current platform does pretty good, I'm saying this as an owner of a 2020 AWD LT. It drives really good and the 1.5 turbo does it's job, unlike what the naysayers tell us. This piques my interest as to what the next one will be like... I'm interested. :)
The 2010-2017 Equinox was a much better size. My wife has a 2013. She bought it new. Doesn’t want to go smaller or as large as a Blazer. I guess she’ll go elsewhere.
Richard: That seems kind of a strange thing to say. Without Googling it, I can't imagine the current Equinox is much different in size from hers. I'm sure the new one will be about the same size too. Not only that, but Chevy/GM have way too many SUV/CUV's and should have something that matches up in size to her car now.
But the funny part of your comment is that you seem to infer that by going to another brand that you (she) will find the exact same size vehicle to the exact millimeter. Chances are, every brand will either be one or two inches smaller or bigger. So would there be another reason why she would switch?
The Buick Envision and Cadillac XT4 are slightly larger than the Equinox and Terrain, while smaller than a Blazer or XT5. GM has figured out totally redesigning a new generation isn’t necessary, improvements and updates are all that is needed. Toyota has been doing that forever on the Corolla, Camry and Tacoma, same old platform for decades. New sheet metal and a few technology updates and presto, consumers don’t know the difference apparently! The fake media loves to promote anything foreign, they have copied everything from American companies the last four decades. Vehicles, electronics and appliances. Korean cars like KIA and Hyundai have had multiple major engine recalls, the media doesn’t talk about that. Covid made us realize we depend on China for 90%+ of our prescription drugs, the global supply chain is a double edged sword. We had better become more self sufficient or we will cease to exist. If we can’t supply our essential goods and supplies, the global transportation cost will increase product prices. If China decides to take Taiwan, our chip crisis will become much worse than anything we’ve experienced the last two plus years. GM is doing the prudent thing, keep both EV development and ICE available until the consumer demand is sufficient to transition and when the infrastructure allows for a smooth shift from fossil fuel.
