Here’s Why Your Chevy Cruze 1.4L Engine May Have Performance Issues In Cold Weather

Some Chevy Cruze owners may notice performance issues with the turbocharged 1.4L I4 LUV gasoline engine in extremely cold weather. Now, possible causes and fixes for the issues have been identified.

According to a recent report from GM TechLink, some units of the 2011- through 2016-model-year Chevy Cruze equipped with the turbocharged 1.4L I4 LUV gasoline engine may experience a loss of power or illuminated Check Engine Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) in extremely cold conditions. After driving the vehicle, the performance issues may diminish. It’s possible that the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) may be triggered:

  • P0299 (Engine Underboost)
  • P0234 (Engine Overboost)
  • P0236 (Turbocharger Boost Sensor Performance), P2227 (Barometric Pressure (BARO) Sensor Performance)
  • P2261 (Turbocharger Bypass Valve Stuck)
  • P00C7 (Intake Air Pressure Measurement System – Multiple Sensors Not Plausible)

It’s also possible that an increase in crankcase pressure may result in an oil leak around seals and gaskets.

For vehicles where a performance or drivability issue is present, GM recommends checking for ice blockage around the crankcase vent tube, ice accumulation on the intake manifold blocking the PCV passage in the cylinder head, ice accumulation in the charge air cooler restricting flow to the throttle body, and possible contamination at the charge air bypass valve (water, oil, or sludge).

GM recommends that a technician disassemble and clean the charge air bypass valve if contamination is discovered. Additionally, it’s recommended that the intake manifold be replaced, plus the charge air bypass valve, if needed.

If the Chevy Cruze’s turbocharged 1.4L engine is not producing the correct boost level, and there is no issue found with the turbo wastegate actuator or the turbo itself, it’s not recommended that the turbocharger is replaced. Rather, the charge air bypass valve should be cleared of any water or oil accumulation on the vacuum side port, and the intake manifold be replaced.

It’s also recommended that if any sludge, water or ice is found from the cylinder head, cam cover, or PCV pipes, including ice build-up blocking the cylinder head, the intake manifold should replaced.

Notably, the redesigned intake manifold includes a new intake positive pressure port location.

Similar issues and fixes have been identified for the 2012 through 2020 Chevy Sonic and the 2023 through 2021 Buick Encore.

  • Is Chevy going to pay for these "recommend " replacements or a qualified technician to check and clear the problems? Because this sounds like a manufacturer defect to me

    • I don't think she's doing a bad job actually. At least I'm making money with GM that's for sure. Up a few grand from 2020, now as far as killing the Cruze? Yeah not a good thing to do but the car segment isn't where the money is. It's trucks and SUVs and EVs

      • Yea that’s where the money is for right now until gas prices skyrocket or the economy tanks and sends people looking for more affordable and fuel efficient cars. It’s a very short sighted and greedy approach to alienate a huge segment of customers. You have a lot of multi vehicle households where they may own a truck or suv but also want a 2nd or 3rd smaller fuel efficient vehicle. It’s extremely dumb to hand those potential sales to your competitors on a silver platter because you won’t offer any products to meet those additional needs. Talk about putting all your eggs in one basket. Toyota has no problem selling Camrys and Corollas, Honda has no trouble selling Accords and Civics, Nissan and all the rest.

  • The Chevy Cruze is the worst car I’ve ever had…it’s not good on gas and seems like when one thing mess up everything mess up.

    • I've had two Cruzes and they both run great (2014 was a lil wacky but it wasn't nothing major) and my 17 is a beauty. Definitely wished they still made them in the States.

    • Are you first owner? My went 100k no probs then I moved up.. maybe previous owner was neglectful.. I found many used at 60k that had looked like a dumpster fire in inside

      • For the 14 Cruze I was the third and the 17 I was the second both clean amd kept up like they just came from the factory.

    • I’ve had a 2012 (2nd owner) and now 2016 (1st owner) and have had no real issues with neither. Excellent gas mileage. Both driven respectively. Not bagged on. Both vehicles as good as my ‘94 Cavalier was.

  • I’ve been through 3 motors with my 2011 Eco Turbo engine. So does this mean they’re finally calling a recall?

  • So JW as long as your making money with GM it is OK for Mary to keep making producing inferior engines everything is good . How about spending a little more in money on the quality of the part specs so the parts last longer without a breakdown ..

  • My girlfriend owned a cruze it has a cracked head at 60 k was the worst problematic car I have ever seen strait up junk and they know it but refuse to do anything about it.
