GM Offers Simplified EV Charging Payment Feature In Collaboration With EVgo

GM and its charging partner EVgo have developed technology that enables seamless payment for EV drivers at public charging stations.

Thanks to the new Plug and Drive feature in the various GM MyBrand smartphone application, owners of GM-built EVs can now plug their vehicle into a public EVgo charging station, wait for the charging session to be complete and drive away without ever having to fiddle with a third-party smartphone app, RFID fob or credit card. The EVgo charge stall will automatically charge the owner for the session through the GM MyBrand app, which would already have the user’s credit card information on file.

Plug and Charge requires the user to have a GM MyBrand app installed on their smartphone and loaded with their credit card information, as well as an OnStar Connected Services plan, which starts at $24.99 a month in the United States. The user must also sign up for an EVgo account, which will also be linked to their GM MyBrand app.

GM entered a partnership with EVgo back in 2020 that will see the two companies set up roughly 2,700 individual charging stalls nationwide, tripling the size of the nation’s largest EV charging network and helping to ensure future GM EV owners have ample access to charging stations while they are out in public.

Plug and Charge is an expansion of the existing Ultium Charge 360 holistic charging approach, which integrates charging networks, GM vehicle mobile apps, and other products and services to simplify the overall charging experience for GM EV owners. Ultium Charge 360, GM says, is intended to simplify the charging experience and make it easier to pay for charging sessions even when using stalls operated by a variety of companies including EVgo, ChargePoint or Blink, among others.

“We want to be the company that makes the EV experience seamless and convenient for everyone, as well as take the mystery and fear factor out of EV ownership,” Hoss Hassani, GM vice president of EV Ecosystem, said in a prepared statement. “Plug and Charge complements the work already in place with Ultium Charge 360 and will be part of a much larger effort this year to expand charging infrastructure, access and education.”

  • Well you can still use DC Fast Charging without Plug & Charge. Just swipe your credit card like a gas pump or use the app.

  • What about you? You're not president you’ve never been president you have no money you could die today and nobody would know you were gone, so why would you be included in the worst president?

  • Yeah speaking of that, I looked up the closest EVgo station to me. It's about an hour away, and there is only one review stating that there isn't actually a charging station there.

    I seriously considered an EV until looking at where I would actually charge on a typical longer trip I might take. Public charging looks like kind of a disaster.

  • My problem plagued Bolt continued with problems as I drove from Texas to my Florida home. I stopped at EV Go Station and it had been vandalized and was very slow but at least I didn't get stranded there as I did with Electrify American fast charging DC stations. First my Bolt didn't accept the heavier water cooled DC chargers without holding up the the charging cord when connecting. Second after charging, the service soon indicator light came on and the car wouldn't turn on or turn off within seconds of each other but more importantly I couldn't get it in gear, reverse or drive for hours. The 20 hour driving time from San Antonio went to 30+ plus hours with the recharging time and the delays of being stranded, usually as long or longer as the charging time. Four separate calls to GM Roadside "Ass"istance with the wait of five hours for a tow the last incident. I took plyers to disconnect the 12-volt battery in order to reboot it. That worked. GM Road Ass istance tow drivers would not touch the old technology 12-volt battery. THE BOLT IS NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME. I am also a proud Democrat.

  • I am now promoting EV’s for everyone but me, that will drive down the demand for gas and the price will drop as well!
