General Motors Benchmarking Lucid Air

General Motors is poised to significantly expand its all-electric portfolio with 30 new EVs set to launch globally by 2025. Now, The General has been caught benchmarking the all-electric Lucid Air, a new battery-driven four-door sedan that just hit the market for the 2022 model year and slated to rival upcoming EV products from Cadillac.

The Lucid Air is the California-based EV startup’s very first passenger vehicle. Also known for providing the batteries for the Formula E racing series, Lucid Motors is now stepping into the luxury passenger car business with this new four-door sedan.

The Lucid Air presents a highly aerodynamic exterior, with a wheelbase that measures in at 116.5 inches and an overall length of 195.9 inches. The aesthetic is sleek and low, with horizontal styling elements and clean design elements punctuated by technical details.

Inside, the Lucid Air sports a luxurious cabin space and plenty of natural light. The sedan offers room for five passengers, as well as an optional Executive Rear Seating upgrade for a rear-seat reclining function. Up front, there are large digital screens for the gauges and infotainment specs, while tech specs will include the addition of Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities through an over-the-air update expected in the next few years.

The Lucid Air is offered in a variety of trims and powertrains. The entry-level model equips a single electric motor for the rear wheels that provides 480 horsepower and 406 miles per charge, while the rest of the lineup incorporates a dual-motor powertrain. The range-topper doles out 1,111 horsepower, and can complete the quarter mile in less than 10 seconds at 144 mph, plus as much as 520 miles between plugs.

Pricing ranges greatly between the five available trim levels, starting at $78,900 for the Lucid Air Pure, all the way up to $170,500 for the range-topping Dream Edition Range.

Looking ahead Cadillac has several EVs on the horizon, at least two of which will be sedans. One of these new Cadillac EV sedans will be the top-shelf, hand-built Cadillac Celestiq, while the other, as-of-yet-unnamed sedan will be smaller than the Celestiq.

It’s also worth noting that Ford is currently benchmarking the Lucid Air as well, as covered by our sister publication, Ford Authority.

  • Keeping my fingers crossed! This is more good news that maybe, just maybe Cadillac (and Buick???) will be giving us one or two electric sedans.

    • @91fairladyz
Yes as far as motor efficiency and overall packaging. NOT for Infotainment Software though. Nobody comes close to Tesla on Car Software, they are five years ahead if not more than any other Automaker.
I know I keep beating a bead horse but GM better start utilizing BEV specific parts so they can start offering Frunks on their NON Pickup BEV's. The Frunk on the Lucid is bigger than some Trunks....it is insane.

  • Tesla design is still #1 everyone come at the master Elon musk but we all know the best always watch the rest of the flock

  • GM, as usual, has no idea how fierce the competition in EV sales is going to be. I doubt GM can increase its share of the retail market with EVs. Storm clouds ahead.

  • Have seen several Lucid’s in Southern California and they are beautiful cars. If you are going to benchmark a luxury EV, Lucid is the one you want to aspire to. A beautifully crafted interior and fit and finish is exceptional. If gm produced the Tesla the automotive industry would trash them relentlessly. Fit and finish on Teslas is an embarrassment. Don’t even get me started on their interior design.

    • You are right. We will soon have our second Tesla. Love the EV part. Interior is low level, fit and finish second rate. They drive well and no major failures. We will definitely be in the market for a 2024 model EV. We will be closely watching the newcomers for range, style, new features, and quality. Maybe an SUV EV.

  • It would be wise to benchmark Lucid. Imagine a Tesla with a real interior, this would be them

  • Quality sells. And Lucid is quality. Style and distance between plugs, is everything. Any EV company can put out a vehicle to the masses and sell junk, if you enjoy getting your vehicle fixed all the time. Cheap means just that, cheap. Tesla does not sell a quality product, they just got the jump on everyone else.

      • The Lucid Air and Mercedes EQS will be more of a fair comparison while the CELESTIQ will be more comparable to the upcoming Rolls Spectre somewhat.

  • Just what is "benchmarking"? Assigning a car as a benchmark for others to follow? Why don't you people use the English language once in a while!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????
