The Chevy D-Max Pickup Was Ecuador’s Best-Selling Vehicle In 2021

In addition to repositioning Chevrolet as the best-selling car brand in Ecuador in 2021, General Motors achieved another significant feat at the product level in the South American country. The automaker has just reaffirmed that through the 2021 calendar year, the Chevy D-Max pickup was the best-selling vehicle in Ecuador, the only country in the world where the company manufactures and markets the midsize pickup so far.

The Chevy D-Max ended 2021 as the best-selling vehicle in Ecuador for the first time, marking a historic result for both the model and the Ecuadorian automotive market, where the best sellers had always been small cars and not a medium pickup. The D-Max, manufactured locally at the GM OBB plant, led the country with 6,336 units sold and continues to consolidate its leadership in the first two months of the year.

“Our commercial and product strategy is aimed at offering the best alternatives in all market segments. We are proud to know that we are not only the preferred brand by Ecuadorians, but we are also leaders in all the segments in which we participate,” said Chevrolet Marketing Manager in Ecuador, Oswaldo León, in a statement. “During 2022, we’re keeping our focus and working hard so that the D-Max remains the number one model on the market,” he added.

To celebrate this important model milestone in the Ecuadorian market, GM has just launched the 2022 Chevy D-Max Hi Ride Sport, a special edition equipped with a sports accessory kit that is now available at the brand’s dealer network in the country. In addition, the manufacturer plans to significantly increase production of the D-Max at the Quito plant to meet the high demand for the model in the domestic market.

The company thus reaffirms its commitment to the development of the automotive industry in Ecuador and reinforces the national production of the successful Chevy D-Max. In fact, this Chevrolet mid-size pickup has become one of the most iconic models in that market and currently represents a third of all vehicle production in the country, with a significant percentage of locally sourced parts.

The Chevy D-Max is a jointly developed pickup truck between GM and Isuzu, whose partnership in the truck segment ended in 2016. Unlike the international-market Chevy Colorado, the D-Max uses the exact same design and name as the Isuzu D-Max. Since its introduction in 2006, it has been manufactured in Ecuador, but it was also assembled at the GM Colmotores facility in Colombia, as well as at the defunct GM Arica plant in Chile and GM Mariara plant in Venezuela.

  • I don't think it looks too terrible, but it certainly looks as outdated as the description of its history would have you believe. I can only assume these are very affordable in Ecuador.

    • I believe the nose design is because its sold in countries, particularly the EU, that have pedestrian crash standards.

Save the front and rear sheet metal, it's the same car as the current-gen Colorado. They're not cheap, list is $28k-$47k.

  • I struggle with the comment they are fugly, I'm trying to think of a good looking truck. As a gringo retired to Ecuador for ten years I have a different perspective as a hotrodder. I bought an '06 D-Max 4x4 with 3.5L DOHC V6. It is one of the nicest driving trucks I have owned and the engine is strong. My truck had 205K km o the clock, drove out fine. My mechanic serviced the vehicle with all new OEM suspension, steering, brakes and we noticed no change, that is a good long term review.

  • I appreciate Mr. Ledoux's insight.

While visiting Ecuador for a couple of weeks, I made it a point to ask every cab driver the same question: if you were going to buy a pickup truck, which would you buy? Most commented on how Toyota Tacoma was a good truck, but too expensive. The hands down winner was the Chevy D-Max due to cost, reliability, parts being readily available and the fact that most mechanics are familiar with the line. So...when I retire to Ecuador, I know exactly what my choice will be. Base line model Chevy D-Max, 4x4, hopefully gas and not a diesel engine.

    • Going only by the GM Ecuador site for models, they don't make a 2dr anymore. All three pictures are the same however, spread over three levels of comfort, same drivetrain, diesel. My engine reminds me of a 383 I had in an '80 El Camino, drive it everywhere in third and it uses GPH because at idle it makes good power:).
