General Motors South America reported that Chevrolet continued its historic leadership position in Ecuador in 2021, finishing the year as the best-selling car brand in the Latin American country. Despite various difficulties in assembling and marketing vehicles faced by the automotive industry at large, The General managed to make the Bow Tie brand remain the Ecuadorian public’s favorite.
GM’s local subsidiary has just announced that its bread-and-butter Chevrolet brand closed out the 2021 calendar year with a total of 24,751 sales in Ecuador, completing its 27th consecutive year as the country’s best-selling brand. According to the Chamber of the Ecuadorian Automotive Industry (CINAE), this figure represents a market share of 21.4 percent, marking an important advantage over the other brands present in the South American country.
“In 2021 we maintained a very efficient business strategy, with meticulous inventory management to contain the effects of the materials crisis that caused delays in product supply and availability,” said Commercial Director of Chevrolet Ecuador, Marcus Oliveira, in a statement translated by GM Authority from Spanish. “This year we will continue to face some challenges, but we are optimistic about the recovery in demand and the opportunities to further strengthen our position in the market,” he added.
Notably, the 24,751 units sold by Chevrolet in Ecuador throughout 2021 imply a significant increase of 39.5 percent compared to the 17,730 units that the brand delivered during the 2020 calendar year. In fact, this performance was in perfect harmony with the general trends of the Ecuadorian automotive market, which also grew 39 percent in 2021.
Without providing specifics regarding sales of individual models, GM reported that the Chevy D-Max – manufactured locally at the GM OBB plant in Ecuador – was the country’s best-selling vehicle in 2021. The Chevrolet midsize pickup, co-developed with Isuzu, has a long history of local Ecuadorian production, establishing itself as one of the most emblematic models of the local automotive industry in the last two decades.
In addition, GM states that the Chevy Captiva followed the D-Max as the second best-selling vehicle in Ecuador in 2021. In addition, the Bow Tie brand managed to place three other models in the top 10 best-selling vehicles list in the local market. As such, the automaker is optimistic about Chevrolet’s performance in 2022, expecting even further growth in sales volume in the South American country.
