As part of a new manufacturing strategy for the San Luis Potosí plant, General Motors has just announced that it will increase production of the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain in Mexico. While the automaker’s local subsidiary said that it will stop manufacturing the Chevy Onix in the Latin country, it also stated that it will increase the workforce of the Mexican factory to raise production volume of both crossovers.
The end of the subcompact car’s production in Mexico next May will not imply a job cut at the San Luis Potosí plant, but will rather allow the hiring of 1,300 new employees to increase the production volume of the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain starting from the first quarter of the year. As such, that figure will represent a significant 23 percent increase in the plant’s workforce.
“The new manufacturing strategy will result in the hiring of approximately 1,300 new employees, which would be added to the 5,400 who currently work in the San Luis Potosí complex,” said Director of Communications and Public Relations of GM Mexico, Teresa Cid, in to statement. “Hiring began in February, and this year, we should reach about 6,700 employees at the plant,” she added.
In response to serious logistical difficulties in the global supply chain, GM decided to simplify its purchasing processes to make the most of the capabilities of each plant and better meet the demand for vehicles with the greatest growth potential. That’s the case for the high-volume Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain in North America, whose suppliers are in the region, unlike the Onix with many parts sourced from China.
Increased Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain production at the San Luis Potosí plant will allow it to meet demand for the updated models, mainly in the United States, Canada and, to a lesser extent, the domestic market of Mexico. Both crossovers received a commercial mid-cycle refresh in the 2022 model year, while also being Chevrolet and GMC‘s best-selling utility vehicles.
In particular, the extra workforce to increase production volume at the San Luis Potosí plant will allow the company to improve the supply of GMC Terrain units. Unlike the Chevy Equinox which is also made in Canada and China, the Mexican complex is the only facility where GMC’s compact crossover is currently produced to cover the U.S. market, in addition to Canada, the Middle East and Mexico.

I would love to have a 2022 Terrain AT4, but not with the current 1.5L
I cannot understand the logic not to offer the 2.0l
or at the very least they have an updated 1.5L in China with more torque and i believe 200hp , make this available for NA
why is GM destroying the Equinox and Terrain brands ?
Because they want you to buy the 2.0 Envision made in CHINA
They aren't destroying it, they stopped because no one bought them and they were costing money on the bottom line. Sales are up, reviews are up, profit is up, do you do any research before typing?
They may not have destroyed them but they did the usual GM thing. Decontent once std things like a leather steering wheel in place of a cheap urethane one, delete 2 engine choices that made at least the GMC version stand out against competitors and the usual eliminations of exterior color choices save the rental favorites white, black and several shades of grey.
And I call bull on the 2.0T not selling. You are aware that every single 2018-2020 Denali trim had this engine as std and about half of the SLT trims had it. The SLE models were even often equipped with this engine but in less volume than the others. They can spin this any way they want but both Equinox and Terrain models are spotted all the time with dual exhaust which signifies they are equipped with the 2.0 engine. Towards the end if the 2020 run they filled dealer lots of 1.5 engines and deleted the 2.0T for the remaining 2021 year so that must be where they are coming up with this nonsense.
Sure profits are up. When you keep raising prices, deconenting, and making them in other lower wage countries profits will be up. Sales are not up. The Nox has slid down the ladder to number 14 and the GMC version isn't even on the top 25. When you don't make something you can't sell it! Regarding reviews they are very mixed. Most pan these for their rental car cheap interior plastic, underpowered 1.5T, elimination of the 2.0T and smaller than much of the competition for cargo and interior room. I would wager a months salary that in most any comparison test the Nox and terrain would finish dead last or close to it.
Joe your 100% correct your write on point I wish other people can read and pay attention to your comments I’m glad some people realize this .Gm making it easy to look at other manufacturers with these on going silly deleting engine choice decisions specially in there top trim levels !!!
At the least offer the 2.5 again at around 210 n/a hp for an option if they don't want it to step on the Acadia's engine options..
Volume of the Equinox is increasing in Mexico because GM is stopping production at GM Cami in Canada in April, to retool for GM's new Brightdrop electric vehicle....pretty simple!
Yes great news with ramping up production for the equinox/terrain but they definitely need to bring back the 2.0 l engine 1.5 not going to make the grade at least give us the 2.0 l LSY engine that in the Buick envision not everybody want to purchase a buck I stick to North America built product!
I agree with many. Getting rid of the 2.0L for just the 1.5L is a joke! The 2.0L was a stout little engine and got about the same MPGs. How about GM open a plant here in the United States, give US workers more jobs, and keep it in house?!?! Would make sense right!
About? It was a solid 3+ mpg short and in this class of vehicle mpg is a much bigger priority than some extra power when the standard powerplant is on par with the rest of the non-hybrid class.
Because it would drive up the cost, unions are greedy and cause the prices to increase, which people will complain and then buy a better cost alternative. Unions have ruined the whole star spangle American dream some of you keep spouting. They have to go out of the country for more reasonable labor costs.
I agree 100%. I had two Terrain's but am now in a Cadillac xt4. They shut down several plants in the USA including Lordstown where they could have made the Terrain or something. Everything made oversea's China, Mexico ect.
GM talks bs when they say "we build them where we sell them". Equinox, Terrain, Encore and Encore GX, Trax,Blazer, Trailblazer and Envision all made outside of the US.
Not to mention Fairfax that could have easily built the Eqinox.
Roger Smith and Mary Barra are quite the pair of bookends. One had a vision of robots whirring about in dark factories with minimal human employees. The other using as much slave labor as she can get away with and no worry of human rights or EPA requirements.
With market share around fifteen percent it won’t be too long before she’s part of bringing gm to it’s knees for the second time. Quite the legacy the last forty years of gm management has achieved!
Sales up, profits up, stock price up, reviews up, what more do you want? Maybe read some news before commenting?

I don’t know what alternate universe you live in. You may want to peek your head out of the gm corporate bathroom.
I am a loyal GM cars buyer since 1997.
it's a pity than the Equinox, Trax, Blazer and Trailblazer are not made in USA by UAW Brothers & Sisters.
Now, I own a 2021 Chevrolet Malibu and my choice is very limited in order to buy a car or even a SUV built by GM in USA.
Either the Bolt with a very high foreign parts content or the Malibu.
I hope GM will build affordable EV in the USA.
You mean as in the stock being down 28% down so far this year?
Philippe, check out the 2021 and newer Bolts. They have the battery and much of the powertrain now manufactured in the US, unlike the earlier ones where most things came from Korea. On the Bolt EUV I saw, the US parts content was 63% with Korea at 15%. Among vehicles today, that's actually one of the highest US parts percentages of anything on sale.
Toyota RAV4 built in the US
Honda CRV built in the US
Ford Escape built in the US
Nissan Rouge built in the US
Jeep Cherokee built in the US
Chevy Equinox built in Mexico (once built in the US)
GMC Terrain built in Mexico
What's wrong with thus picture?
Yep, I called it yesterday on the Onix story!
Get use to it folks GM makes more of a profit making these vehicles in Mexico. Plus the Quality seems better with vehicles being built down there according to certain owner reviews . Workers take pride in there work down there it seems. And the bottom line is whatever GM puts out no matter where it’s built it will sell . It’s been proven time and time again 🤣😂😎😎
I have a 2019 Terrain with the 2.0 and love power of the engine. I’m in the market for another compact SUV but won’t buy the 2022 Terrain with the 1.5 as it’s gutless. Bring back the 2.0 and I’ll order one. Otherwise I’m going with a Canadian made CR-V.
Right on, I’ll order on if they put a 2.0l
