Earlier this year, we reported that General Motors will increase the tow ratings in some model configurations of the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2021 GMC Sierra 1500. Now, we’re back to exclusively report that those increased tow ratings will be accompanied by updates to the towing technologies and trailering assist features.
Sources familiar with product plans tell GM Authority that the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 will feature enhancements to the trailering technologies.
Though it’s currently unclear what specific improvements will be in store, we do know that Chevrolet is deleting the Trailer Camera Package from the 2021 Silverado 1500. That package included the Bed View Camera, which provides Two Trailer Camera Provisions. It’s likely that this feature will be one of the ones upgrades or repackaged entirely for the 2021 model year.
Noteworthy towing technologies available on the current model year, 2020 Silverado 1500 include 15 camera views – more views than any other truck. These 15 views work in unison with the truck to improve the towing experience from start to finish, making it easier to get hitched up, provide confidence while towing, and even help the driver maneuver into tight spots when parking with the trailer in tow. Meanwhile, the optional Advanced Trailering System features an in-vehicle trailering app that offers customized trailer profiles.
Other noteworthy Silverado towing features include:
Besides the aforementioned increases in maximum tow ratings as well as upgrades to towing technologies, the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 will also receive some changes over the 2020 model year, mostly comprised of changes to features within packages.
Meanwhile, the 2022 Silverado and 2022 Sierra will deliver a mid-cycle refresh that will consist of updates to the exterior and a new interior.
Stay tuned, as we’ll have additional coverage of GM trucks, including the 2021 Chevy Silverado, very soon. In the meantime, subscribe to GM Authority for more Chevy Silverado news, GMC Sierra news, Chevrolet news, GMC news, and around-the-clock GM news coverage.

I own a 2020 hd, it remembers 1/3 of the time which trailer is on, even though it never got disconnected. I get an error message saying it can't remember the gain every start. Trailer brake lights flash every 10 secs, truck off, unlocked, trailer theft off as well.
The trailer cameras take out the 4 pin connector on the bumper, and the only other connector is in the box. Yet if you have a gooseneck or fifth wheel the camera connectors on the bumper will sheer off on a tight turn. The trailer tire sensors only do 80 psi max, at that pressure I essentially have a flat as all my trailers are 105 psi. The whole system is very poorly thought out honestly.
It's always obvious when a group of engineers design something they never do or use.
I’d like to see a truck built for work. Big HP engine ie. 6.2 less back sensors that make the audible ding when
The hitch isn’t exactly how the truck likes it regardless of truck/trailer combo needs it. Get rid of the door dads that are cool but not necessary IF you know how to drive. Cut the fat and make a real working man truck that has what is needed not what every soccer mom or lift kit Walmart cowboy thinks is cool. Let’s have a real truck for real work.
Built for work? You want big torque and it's called 6.6 duramax lol...
Children please sit and listen...diesels are over priced cool things to have. Many more loads have been hauled in the past with small block Detroit iron engines than the diesels of today. Bring back the big block gas engines with today’s tech for efficiency and you will have all the power you need. Most of you all just want to tune a dmax so it “rolls coal” enter eye roll...way too many Walmart trucks out there with shines trash can sizes exhaust tips without a scratch in the bed. Diesels cost more to buy 10k plus, more to maintain 150 for an oil change and when not if they break 3-4 times to repair 1k for injectors at 80-90k miles. The speed limit in most places is 55 on 2 lane and 70-75 on 4 lane. Diesels are cool but a working man can buy a lot of gas for the added cost of being cool.
I ordered an F250 for that reason. Can still get them relatively basic. 7.3 gas engine, no def or dpf or egr or any of that junk. Locking diff. Bench seat. No beepers for lane departure or blind spot or backing up or anything. Mechanical parking brake. Column shifter. No touchscreen. No power seats. No carpet. Normal tailgate that you move up and down with your own arm. No cylinder deactivation. No start/stop. No LED headlights/taillights. Steel wheels. Solid front axle. Manual override locking hubs. Normal gauges with needles. Traditional hydraulic power steering. A key that you turn to start the truck. It's still a fairly simple truck that a guy can fix in the parking lot if he has to.
I'd like to see a standard 3:73 axle gear. This would increase tow ratings. And help keep the 5.3 engine in the 4V mode longer. With the 3:42 axles. The slightest hill or headwind kicks the motor back to 8-cylinders. The 5.3 has plenty of power to tow 11,000 pounds. I've done it many times. And a 3:73 axle would really help out. There's a lot of trailers that boast "half ton towable" until loaded. I towed a toy hauler all over the country that weighed 11,000 pounds loaded. I had to upgrade the tires. But that was it. I like that GM has many engine offers. Unlike Ford. And their still built like a truck. But the rear axle offers are very limited without having to drop another 5K to a special tow package. I also don't need 15 cameras. I know how to drive. Offer a no frills truck with some axle offerings and I'll continue to buy GM..
More power and torque on the 5.3 would certainly be welcome. It is now well behind both the Ram 5.7 and Ford 5.0. Making a 3.73 axle available would be a logical second option choice. Ford offers a 3.73 and Ram a 3.92. Why does GM limit customers to only a 3.42?
because they don't have a 10 speed in all their trucks and the MPG would suffer
Worst then that. My 2020 Silverado RST Z71 towing , brake controller, locking diff with a 3.23 axel. Really? Searched many dealers all said I would have to order one or get a different tow package. 10 or 8 speed trans will do fine with a 3.73 and mpg would be good enough. Come on GM!
Why not order, get what you want?
How about just building a better quality product? Before all this technology came along, were there ever this many recalls on vehicles??? All this electronic crap in vehicles has made things worse because once things go wrong with one thing it just seems to snowball. I'm a GM guy but really do we really need all this unnecessary crap? Build a better truck for people who know how to drive and use them! If you can't drive or park, hook up a trailer without a bazillion cameras helping or even haul a bicycle without using a receiver hitch carrier, don't buy one.
Well said there hombre. I’m with you. Way to much technology. GM listen. It’s ok not fix what’s not broken. Improve on it, it’s ok to be numero 2 on sales but I feel GM doesn’t care if it’s out sold or out performed. I’m a GM guy that left and went to Ford. I’m back an I want to be heard. Want to feel good about what I drive.
Lifelong Gm guy here too but have you seen the 21 Bronco? GM screwed the pooch on the Blazer. Pretty sure the customer wants a full size short wheelbase bad to the bone behemoth not another crossover vehicle. Ford saw the missed opportunity and is going to capitalize on it and look out for Jeep wagoneer it’s gonna be a beast too. C’mon GM corporate weenies! Make something that is fun to drive again. Quit being upstaged by the competition.
"Way to (sic) much technology"
Heard that when dealers started stocking trucks with A/C, power steering and power brakes.
Who needs an automatic transmission?
Who needs an automatic transmission with FOUR speeds?
Damn, can't buy a new truck without FUEL INJECTION !
My favorite, seat belts are "gonna" cause us to drown or burn alive !!!
Where do start let's see my brakes before I received the recall I almost had an accident at a stop light. Passenger side A- arm bearing broke going up and over a curve gave it enough gas to get up and down. Rearend shakes horribly when driving 65 to 75 mph this is very annoying. A/C went out after 2 1/2 years all because GM will not improve the top mounting bracket on the condenser coil $700 later. The shop who did the repairs doesn't understand why GM will not issue a recall for this defect. The shop owner had replaced 6 condensor coils on GM's including mine that month. Now the seat belt needs to be recalled.#chevy2016. Now I'm thinking my next truck just might be a Toyota Tundra made in the good ol USA!#yougotittoyota
I rather take what's on the trailer than the new garbage 2021. I use to love chevy and with my recent issues with an 2013 Silverado I will never buy another modern chevy.
The camera would need to be removed from the tailgate for that to work, maybe install it under the taillight, then it would be available for all times...
