Second quarter Cadillac XT5 sales volume puts the crossover in seventh place in its competitive set, behind the BMW X3/X4 in first place (for a combined 10,833 deliveries), Lexus RX in second, Mercedes-Benz GLC in third, Acura MDX in fourth, Audi Q5 in fifth and Volvo XC60 in sixth. The XT5 outsold the Lincoln Nautilus (previously the MKX; see Lincoln MKX sales), Infiniti QX50 and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

The luxury D-crossover segment contracted 43 percent to 72,406 units in Q2 2020.

We should note that Lexus RX sales now include the two-row RX and the three-row RX L, with the three-row RX L being a rival to the new Cadillac XT6. As such, a more apt comparison would be to pit XT5 and XT6 sales against those of the RX.

Doing so gives Cadillac 9,914 sales, 730 units fewer than the RX family.

The GM Authority Take

It would appear that Cadillac XT5 sales were impacted more than other segment contenders during the second quarter of 2020. We attribute the circumstance to the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in various negative conditions for sales of the XT5 as well as most of the auto industry.

For starters, stay-at-home orders enacted mid-March prevented many customers from purchasing vehicles and dealers from selling them; the orders ran into April and May, both of which fall squarely into the second quarter. Additionally, XT5 sales were negatively impacted by sub-par inventory of product at the retail/dealer level, which was the result of a two-month-long pause in GM production as a result of the Coronavirus. Production started back up mid-May at the GM Spring Hill plant, which produces the XT5 (as well as its larger brother – the XT6, along with the GMC Acadia).

We believe that XT5 sales will rebound during the second half of the 2020 calendar year, barring any further COVID-related interruptions in production (supply) or demand.

  1. Cadillac’s XT5 would do better if there was something distinctive with the vehicle as there’s little to distinguish Cadillac’s XT5 from other CUV made by General Motors as there’s no true advantage in buying a Cadillac XT5 instead of a Chevrolet Blazer if they share so many common features.

    1. I agree, the XT 5 styling is now very dated, it has been around in this basic shape for years so it doesn’t have as much attraction as a newer design. Very basic refreshes just aren’t doing the job. But this is typical anymore, have the same basic design for years then wonder why the sales are dropping off.

      1. The front end styling of the CT6 is not attractive. In fact it is a mess of rounded and angular shapes.

  2. 7th or right above Lincoln seems to be the target for Cadillac management. Never mind everything above it, as long as they sell more than the comparison Lincoln model GM is content!

  3. Sadly XT5 is a common Chevrolet wearing a Cadillac suit. What does GM miss management expect? They always go for the cheapest most common denomiatior in everything they do. XT5 Looks good but it is just another suv. GM mismanagement is totally committed to mediocrity. DO EVERYTHING CHEAP AND FOOL THE BUYING PUBLIC THAT THEY ARE GETTING SOMETHING REAL….

  4. The XT5 isn’t a bad deal if your looking for an upscale 2 row SUV with good MPG. I am getting 24 around town with the AWD v6 and close to 30 hwy. It has a distinctive Cadillac style, your not going to mistake it for any other brand. It has a longer warranty of 4yr 50K and powertrain of 6yr 70K. It is roomy and quiet inside and the bose sound system with CUE is very nicely updated with phone connectivity if you choose carplay or AA. Seating is comfortable for 5 and the rear cargo area has ample room for long road trip baggage. Is it premium..no it isn’t. But I don’t have a money growing in my back yard so for a guy like me it fits my needs well. I see Cadillac updating all of their models now and they are getting more competitive with features as SuperCruise. The new Escalade with the futuristic dash displays are innovative. I like what I see and the future XT5 model with those 2 features alone will put it up much closer to the premium field.

    1. I agree with you, I have an 2019 XT5 Premium Luxury and its quiet, comfortable and 30 mpg on the highway.
Much better than the Blazer that’s made in Mexico.

      1. I guess if you own it then you would appreciate it more for what it is. It has refinement in this 3rd generation – I owned an SRX 2nd Gen before it so I know from again…ownership. The XT5 checked all of the box’s without breaking the bank roll and from experience it is getting better as they update it.

  5. I just received my XT5 luxury addition and i love it. It drives beautifully and it is quick and quiet. MPG is very good and the Bose sound system is great and the cue and on star is unbeatable.

  6. Imagine somebody who looks at these and honestly says “I want one” Laughable. Those old boring boxes arent even Cadillacs by nature. Those should be branded as Buick or something
No wonder those only beat old and niche vehicles

    1. So Lexus sell an even more boring segment vehicle and leads the charts, Lincoln can’t even find that much success while copying the formula.

As seen the XT6, XT4 went on sell also the Covid economy is effecting everything.

  7. Bring out a decent sized sport two-door or convertible with some muscle. Cadillac keeps tempting us with wonderful show cars and then delivers nothing but more plain vanilla. Not everyone wants a sedan, crossover, or hulking SUV. Those markets are already flooded. A personal car with some elegance and distinction would get folks into the showroom again. Offer something nice and fresh that doesn’t cost $100K and still is king of the road.

    1. Hence why I have an X5, I’ve done Cadillac ride and drive for years and test driven all of their CUV’s in some manner either as loaners or just as consideration for purchase. And I would never buy one… I did choose my V series over the M because at least Cadillac put in some effort to make the ATS-V competitive.

  9. This is ABSOLUTELY Cadillac’s fault. Both vehicles are great.. despite the hate here from some. The driving dynamics are actually quite nice…. and what did was is build a vehicle for the market it was intended.. LMFAO at the idea of these supposed great BMW X5s out there being driven by, typically, moms doing 55 in the fast lane. World’s Ultimate BS Machine. Where Cadillac screwed itself was in marketing the XT5 and XT6 as separate vehicles when from the start the intention was to have an RX competitor… which they new full well was pushing two vehicles in one with the RX and RX-L. And U guessed it.. looking at the sales numbers.. I’m seeing it on the heals of the Lexus with a two vehicles that have constantly been called the short and long version of the same vehicle.. with a different face. Same interior.. same engines.. same platform. XT6 should have been XT5-L the whole time. Maybe Cadillac thought.. “Oh well.. they’ll separate our numbers none the less, despite Toyota doing it with its RX .”
