The Buick Regal will not live on past the 2020 model year, General Motors has confirmed.
In a statement made to Motor Authority, Buick spokesman Stuart Fowle said the Regal’s demise comes amid a significant dip in demand for sedans.
“Buick continues to be ahead of the consumer shift toward SUVs,” Fowle said. “In fact, nearly 90 percent of Buick sales to date this year have been crossovers. Although the Regal will no longer be offered in the U.S. and Canada, it will be sold in China where demand for sedans remains significant.”
Regal sales were down almost 20 percent year-over-year through the first nine months of 2019. Buick sold 11,008 examples of the sedan through to Q3 in 2018, but moved just 8,849 units in the same time frame this year. By comparison, the brand sold 73,905 Encores in the first nine months of 2019, along with 41,013 Enclaves and 24,849 Envisions.
Another reason for the Regal’s demise is the fact GM sold its Opel brand to Groupe PSA back in 2018. GM elected not to move production of the sedan to the Americas, instead paying Opel to continue to build the car for it in Germany. Opel also sells its own version of the car in Europe, marketed as the Insignia. GM builds the car itself in China and will continue to do so for the time being, as per Fowle’s comments.
With this change, Buick’s U.S. and Canadian lineups will soon consist of crossovers only. The demise of the LaCrosse full-size sedan was announced earlier this year and production of the Cascada convertible ended in October. Like the Regal, the LaCrosse will remain in production in China, with GM having recently introduced a facelifted version of the sedan in the country.
The 2020 Buick Regal Sportback comes standard with the turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder LTG engine, which produces 250 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Higher in the range, the sportier Regal GS comes equipped with the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LGX engine, which produces 310 horsepower and 282 pound-feet of torque. The Regal TourX wagon model is only offered with the 2.0L LTG four-cylinder.
As we reported previously, the Regal Sportback will receive a sporty ST Appearance Package for the 2020 model year. The ST package will only be offered on the mid-range Essence trim level, which slots in between the Preferred and Avenir trim levels.

Import it and the new La Crosse from China. Ask President Trump not to tax these Buick vehicles. The Japanese and Koreans doesn't seem to have a problem selling sedans. In fact , they are introducing new models as we speak.
Opel has just presented the Opel/Vauxhall facelift of the Regal/Insignia/Commodore

The non-TourX Insignia sport wagon is spectacular. Why on earth won't Americans embrace hatchbacks and wagons??!!
I cannot understand for the life of me why sitting up high is literally the reason for the SUV/crossover craze. And now that nearly everyone has one, the argument of being able to see by being up higher is pointless.
GM seems to have little interest in marketing / advertising / selling Buicks in the USA. For those of us who have long admired the brand, GM's management continues to disappoint us.
I think it's safe to assume that this is no surprise to anyone here. Correct? I knew this was the case for sure after visiting the LA auto show last week. When at the Buick section (yes, to mostly check out the new Encore GX), I noticed there wasn't one Regal on the floor. I asked one of the reps for Buick and he told me that the car is being offered for 2020, but dealers can't order them any more. Basically, what's in dealer inventory or the pipeline coming in will be it. Yes, it was that obvious.
We knew this was going to happen when Opel was gone, can we get and Alpha Regal/Commodore now?.
Another reason my next car will NOT be a GM product. They just killed off the only vehicle I was even remotely interested in. With the Malibu gone probably the following year or two and then the Camaro GM will not have a single product left that remotely interests me!
You should buy a truck. GM likes it if you buy trucks because they make money.
Sorry but I can't afford two mortgages! GM fail!
Well that's remotely too bad...
no Buick cars....GM has destroyed what was left of Buick's soul/legacy.
Buick has been dead for some time. They've had so many chances to reinvent the brand to appeal to people under 70, and they just haven't done it.
You need to open your eyes. There are pleasing Encores all over the place where I live and and a modern Buick Regal won the European Car of the Year award. If you think the Buick of today looks anything like the sometimes valuable collectibles of yesteryear, you need to check your prescription.
They made very little effort to sell Regals (and LaCrosses), so they made their bed, now lay in it.
Thank goodness the current and forthcoming Buick CUVs and SUVs look well-done.
Another car nameplate gone.
Maybe they'll bring it back as an anonymous looking CUV with a 4 cylinder.
Sell a turbo version with the Grand National name on it.
No, I'm not suggesting this, but it wouldn't surprise me.
How GM didn't have a five Door EV Version ready for the an All New Regal is almost Criminal.
People that know about the Current Regal love them. An EV Regal with a great modern exterior design and great interior would've made a Great competitor to the Tesla Model 3 with a bigger Presence and cheaper price.
But as I have been stating here for months now...GM is All Just Talk about EV's and their Zero/Zero/Zero Future.
I mean they have the Bolt right now and that is it. No All New EV anywhere in sight for us here in America.
