2020 Chevrolet Silverado 6.2L Offers Optional Performance Package

We’ve already brought you most of the details on the changes and updates that General Motors has applied to the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado lineup, but one area we have yet to address is the new available Performance Upgrade Package that is available on the truck.

Buried in GM’s press release for the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado was a very brief line about the new optional package, which is only available on trucks equipped with the L87 6.2-liter V8 engine.

“For those wanting even more performance, the Silverado 6.2L is available with a Performance Upgrade Package that adds a performance air intake and cat-back performance exhaust system, raising output to 435 horsepower and 469 lb-ft of torque,” the automaker said.

By the sounds of it, this package pairs the cat-back exhaust system for the 6.2-liter V8 that was offered on the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado via the Chevrolet Accessories catalog with the Chevrolet Accessories cold air intake system. Together, these parts are worth an extra 15 horsepower and 9 lb-ft of torque, with the engine normally rated at 420 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. In the catalog, the cat-back exhaust system sells for $1,645, while the cold air intake sells for $625.

This change comes alongside expanded availability for the 6.2-liter V8 engine in the Silverado for the 2020 model year. The larger V8 is now offered on Custom Trail Boss, LT Trail Boss and RST trims (before it was only offered on the Silverado LTZ and High Country) and will come standard with the Z71 off-road package and four-wheel drive. Additionally, Silverado RST trucks can also only be ordered with the 6.2-liter engine if they are equipped with four-wheel drive.

Pricing and availability for the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado will be announced at a later date. As such, pricing for the optional Performance Upgrade Package is not yet available.

  • Well, this is a nice start for GM but as always only half done. Where are the 3:73 gears? With Ford you can still get them (albeit with the right package) and Ram offers 3:92 gears. And trust me, they make a difference compared to the 3:42 gears GM offers. With performance trucks you’re either all in or out.

      • In the lower trans gears 3:73s get the engine into the power band muey pronto. Then when the ratios start getting a bit steeper, say 4-5-6 the higher gear ratio lets the engine mow through those ratios with that much more verve.
        In normal driving, if the trans skips gears it’s much less noticeable with the 3:73s.
        I like GM trucks but I’m currently driving a very lightly optioned ‘18 F150 SCAB 2WD with the 3.5 Boost and 3:73s. It doesn’t weigh much. Between the gears, the 10 speed, and low vehicle weight this is the first vehicle I’ve owned with no flat spots anywhere in the acceleration curve. Pure power everywhere. Matting the throttle at 60 to pass someone, you’re going near 100 when you’re done. And I’m at 5600 ft elevation.

        Question: can anybody here think of a Chevy engine that doesn’t like high ratio gear sets ie 3:73, 4:11 etc? Put the 6.2 in the lightest truck you can get it in with 3:73s and full throttle driving will become an exercise in spin control! Luckily GM is going to start offering that monster in the lower trim levels so it just might be possible soon. GM: just put a ❎ on that option sheet that says 3:73 posi traction and BOOM! Fastest truck for sale bar none.

      • Spot on. Some people can't think past the ring and pinion. You can have a 3.08 and it still be a rocket ship from a dig or a tq monster with the right trans ratios.

    • I have a 5.3 6 speed 3.42, it needs more gear. 3.73 would be nice, 4.10 would be awesome (33" tire).

      With the 6.2 10 speed, I'd want 3.42 though. Between three power and especially the gearing in the 10 speed, 3.73 would shift too much.

      • It would shift less I think. With more multiplication at the rear tires, it’d just stay in the higher gears more. It’s when you have 3:15 (or lower) the trans is always downshifting. Wife has EB Expedition with 3:15s, 6 speed and where we live (Az mountains) it’s always downshifting. My truck with 3:73s and 10 speed climbs the same grades in 10th. 6th in the 6 speed is 0.69, the 10 speed 0.63, so not much difference, it’s the 3:15 vs 3:73. Leaving a stop light at like 1/2 throttle my truck rips through the gears accelerating. Hers hold the gears much longer.
        A friend of mine had a Silverado with 3:23 gears and was contemplating getting a supercharger. I told him to get some 4:11s first. He did and his description was “she went in a school teacher and came out a porn star”. That was with the old 4 speed trans so when in 4th it was the same as a 1:1 trans with 2:87 gearing - cruised just fine. But tromp that throttle........

    • Amen. I have put off buying a new truck for years because of the rear axel gear ratio issue. I have a 2007 Silverado 5.3 with 3.73 rear (GT4 code I think) in it and it make a huge difference. I think rear axel gears are the single most overlooked performance item today. Many salesmen don’t even understand them. Great question about 3.73 gears. Where did they go as an option in the 1500?

  • I love Chevy but the decisions that this company is making are all half ass. Their new Silverado body's are horrible. They look like a F-150 and a ram had a baby.
    The HP on this trail boss is not impressive at all. They should throw a supercharger on it or something. The 6.2 is more than capable of handling the horsepower they are offering. 550 hp seems a lot better for a performance truck. It might be a complete loss for this company. I'll keep my old schools but I'm not digging the new stuff.

  • My 2018 6.2 crew cab 4x4 with the 6'6" bed has 21k miles on trip meter. Its averaging 21.2 mpg. Thats at 3300" elevation and includes towing my trailer about 2 k miles. Believe me that when i say its fun to drive, the acceleration is amazing and it has a 10,900lbs tow rating. I get 17mpg towing my 5k trailer at 65mpg on average. Great motor and i am so glad i got it over the 5.3, better mileage and way more power.

  • 435 hp, what does the Raptor make 450? Could GM be quietly making a Raptor hunter?

    All the Trail Boss would need is a suspension like the ZR2.

    • I own a LT2 Trail Boss 6.2 with the performance package.
      Price difference between my truck & the Raptor or TRX is probably $30,000 or more ...
      I could upgrade my suspension add 35” tires add a supercharger & still have spent less while totally decimating either of those others ...

  • Have the 6.2, 8spd, Gibson cat back, cold air intake, crew, towing, long box, and it was only available with the 3:42 rear. Healthy tone, best mileage of 24.9. She is a beast. Just wish I could get rid of that GM 1500 front end bounce. Drives my wife sick. Note when I spoke with a GM engineer she told who made the cat back exhaust, can't remember if it was Magna, or Borla, but the system GM installs is the louder vs the softer tone.

  • Patriot Chevy, Limerick, PA offers a 480, or 560 hp Silverado with a Callaway supercharger & 3 year warranty. Can't get more than that if you have the $ and courage to handle that much power.

  • I have a 2019 G.M C. with a 6.2 L now with 1800 miles on it I'm getting 26 M.P.G. With the factory Cat Back exhaust system system. Willie Lockett. N E. Mississippi.

  • Absolutely love my 2019 GMC AT4 with the performance exhaust and cold air intake. Tons of power and super quick off the line. Good fuel economy too. And the tailgate? Not a gimmick - use it all the time. When parking at the supermarket, gas station, bar, etc, people at the are always asking me to see it. Truck is amazing - couldn’t be happier.
