2020 Chevrolet Silverado 6.2L Offers Optional Performance Package

We’ve already brought you most of the details on the changes and updates that General Motors has applied to the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado lineup, but one area we have yet to address is the new available Performance Upgrade Package that is available on the truck.

Buried in GM’s press release for the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado was a very brief line about the new optional package, which is only available on trucks equipped with the L87 6.2-liter V8 engine.

“For those wanting even more performance, the Silverado 6.2L is available with a Performance Upgrade Package that adds a performance air intake and cat-back performance exhaust system, raising output to 435 horsepower and 469 lb-ft of torque,” the automaker said.

By the sounds of it, this package pairs the cat-back exhaust system for the 6.2-liter V8 that was offered on the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado via the Chevrolet Accessories catalog with the Chevrolet Accessories cold air intake system. Together, these parts are worth an extra 15 horsepower and 9 lb-ft of torque, with the engine normally rated at 420 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. In the catalog, the cat-back exhaust system sells for $1,645, while the cold air intake sells for $625.

This change comes alongside expanded availability for the 6.2-liter V8 engine in the Silverado for the 2020 model year. The larger V8 is now offered on Custom Trail Boss, LT Trail Boss and RST trims (before it was only offered on the Silverado LTZ and High Country) and will come standard with the Z71 off-road package and four-wheel drive. Additionally, Silverado RST trucks can also only be ordered with the 6.2-liter engine if they are equipped with four-wheel drive.

Pricing and availability for the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado will be announced at a later date. As such, pricing for the optional Performance Upgrade Package is not yet available.

  • Why did Chevrolet discontinue the Avalanche? The Silverado is a beautiful truck, but the Avalanche is on a different level.

    • An updated Avalanche would be cool. Thing was it wasn’t selling enough to justify continuing the model.

  • Great job GM! I'm so glad that you listened to your customer/fanbase after all these years. Now if you would advertise this. You can get better recognition through other potential buyers. I see other car brands like Honda advertise their Passport by Car and Driver "Best in Class" so if you took that notion in the truck department you can see a better buyer turn out who don't always keep up with the truck news or car news. For example having a truck commercial showing the Colorado as the best truck in it'segment by all the reviews. And advertise the new Silverado with an optional 6.2L and "the cheapest 400+ horsepower truck in the segment" "best towing" ect. Look at how movies are advertise when they come to theaters. I'm just saying when you got the hand why not show it. Market your trucks better not always doing the same commercial with all your JD Power awards. Just my two cents.

    • Now if they could get a 6.2 in the WT trim I'd buy one. Can't afford the 42k plus price range I remember just 5 years ago when trucks weren't 42k for an LS/custom equivalent model. But either way I'm happy they offer the 6.2 in the Custom trail boss trim now :)

  • Meanwhile, Dodge is putting its Hellcat drivetrain in the upcoming Rebel TRX and Ford is strongly rumored to be putting a ~720hp version of its GT500 engine in the last of the F150 Raptors before model refresh.

We already have the Jeep GC Trackhawk, and Dodge will be putting the Hellcat drivetrain in the Durango SRT. Ford is also putting a ~720hp version of the GT500 engine in an Explorer RS model. And all the many European manufacturers have all sorts of high-output SUVs with huge hp, or they’re coming soon.

GM has both the LT4 and LT5 engines that could be dropped any any full-size truck or SUV, and plenty of ways to make mid-size equivalents. We finally got the Tahoe RST, and belatedly the Suburban RST. Now we get an accessory exhaust and cold air.

GM has lost its way in domestic performance leadership. The Corvette and Camaro offerings aren’t nearly enough of a performance footprint, and there’s virtually nothing else GM has that competes with other domestic brands, much less the Europeans.

We didn’t even get to keep the traditional Corvette layout and have a halo mid-engined sports car added. Time for Reuss to get the boot.

  • Best overall combo IMO 6.2L Trailboss LT, 3.42 or 3.73 (Not offered?) with performance package. GM please add 3.73 to this mix and I'm in for the best all around truck ever!

    • I completely agree ..... I have the 6.2 with 3.23 and it totally needs 343 or 373..... in traffic it kinda dogs down with 3.23 Jeff is in the right track ..

  • Borland make the cat back exhaust I have a 2019 DENALI The Dealer put the cat back on for me just got back of my first road trip 5000 miles A/C on 70 the entire trip 70/75 M.P.H 26.9 M.P.G. 20inch Michelin rubber I love it

  • It doesn't just go into 4 cylinder modes. There are 17 different patterns of cylinder deactivation with DFM.
