2018 Holden Commodore Sportwagon Goes On A German Diet

At least one of the homegrown Holden Commodore’s variants will survive post-Australian manufacturing life. While there will be no more ute, the Sportwagon is in for a redo, and Holden has revealed what it will look like when it arrives.

The 2018 Holden NG Commodore Sportwagon takes the sleek and stylish looks of the 2018 Opel Insignia Sports Tourer and adds some Australian cues to make the offering a tad more local in taste. Specifically, that includes a 3.6-liter LGX V6 powered model with AWD, Twinster system torque vectoring and a FlexRide chassis. Europeans will not be treated to a similar combination.

Australians will also have the choice of four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, with a nine-speed automatic thrown in the mix, when the new Commodore Sportwagon arrives.

Over the outgoing VF Commodore Sportwagon, the NG Sportwagon boasts massive weight loss. A whopping 440 pounds have been trimmed, depending on the model, thanks to the E2XX platform. Cargo space isn’t compromised either, with nearly 58 cubic feet of trunk space present.

Holden has largely let Opel’s technology and safety features trickle down to its inbound offerings, meaning IntelliLux Matrix LED lighting, adaptive cruise control, keyless open and close for the tailgate and more will be present.

As for design, if you like the Opel Insignia, you’ll love the Holden Commodore, especially in more expressive and brighter hues like the red seen above. It remains an excellent looking design even with an elongated wheelbase and rear tailgate.

Holden says the 2018 Commodore Sportwagon will follow the launch of the 2018 NG Commodore in early 2018, just months after local production wraps up. Has Holden brought sexy back to the wagon? Consumers will be the ultimate test.
