Unifor Auto Works Approve And Authorize Strike Against Detroit Big Three

The latest in ongoing labor negotiations with General Motors, Ford and Fiat-Chrysler has Unifor executing familiar tactics.

The Truth About Cars reports Unifor Auto Workers have approved a move to strike if necessary. The authorization comes after 99 percent of FCA employees, 98.9 percent of Ford employees and 97.1 percent of GM employees approved the motion.

A strike authorization does not mean a strike is imminent, but it does give the union authority to strike should it become necessary.

“With this clear mandate our members have demonstrated they are in full support of their bargaining committees, and our direction in this set of negotiations. The bargaining committee will not accept a deal without a commitment to investment in Canada’s auto sector,” said Unifor National President Jerry Dias.

The union gave a hard date of September 19 to execute a strike in the event a deal is not struck.
