Breaking: Cadillac Reportedly Cancels Flagship CT8 Program

The market shift to crossovers and SUVs has taken a new victim. Autoline has received word that the flagship Cadillac CT8 program has been cancelled.

The news source tweeted the information to their official Twitter page, but we have yet to hear anything official from Cadillac itself on the matter. However, it doesn’t seem unlikely.

Cadillac has been busy investing rapidly into new crossovers and SUVs as analysts predict a more permanent shift to the body style for the entire market. The news also follows Cadillac’s move to scrap long wheelbase models for China, in favor of a global “right size.”

Concrete information on the Cadillac CT8 was never brought to light, but it was nearly a given the luxury sedan would ride on the Omega platform and offer an even longer wheelbase than the 2016 Cadillac CT6. According to our intel, rear seat passengers were to be emphasized in the flagship sedan.

Has Cadillac made a smart decision to allocate investment elsewhere, or has it made a dire mistake by foregoing a flagship sedan? The news asks more questions than it answers. Stay tuned as more information becomes available.

  • *ucking bean counters. Cadillac is cadifail now. Its dead. They cant even redesign their dated a&s garbage. Typical gm move. Im so tired of it. It is always a waiting game. Bmw is planning a sedan above the 7(besides of the x7), and these bums cant even make a car that can compete with the 7, inside and out. F.u.c.k them. F.uck their art and scince, fu.ck their lifeless tai lights and dated looking profiles. Fuckin' dick.heads

    • Rye the Second,
I feel you are holding back. You need to let go, show your emotions. Do not repress those inner feelings of regret and loss. Just let it come out, you will feel much better after it is all out there.

      • Yes, go and buy a 2016 Cadillac and a sledgehammer, then take out your anger by smashing it to bits. You will be relieved and feel better, and the dealer will make a new sale.

    • Why are you holding back? Tell us how you really feel with a few more words next time. Lol

    • Rye: Thanks for telling it like it is! There are a few of us who want to see an american automaker succeed and reclaim lost prestige. Ford builds appliances, heavy sports cars and unattainable supercars. Chrysler has always had reliability issues. GM was the only one left poised to be world-class. And instead, they keep building appliances. Even the GM concepts suck - I would love to see a mid-engine cadillac supercars - even if it's only in concept form. GM, you just keep letting us down.

      Tesla, you're our only hope.

On a separate note: GM is choosing to build SUVs over sedans? What a great new idea from the General! Let's just classify them as light trucks and circumvent CAFE.

  • Sad not to see a car like this but based on the market and coming regulations the SUV models will be more flexible regulation wise and more profitable.

We may just see a SUV based on the Omega now vs. just a bigger sedan.

Cadillac still needs to sort out the CTS and CT6 since they are nearly the same size.

The fact is car sales are dwindling. Let's face it Porsche and Bentley both have gone SUV as that is where the market is going.

It has much more to do with what people are buying vs. bean counters.

Coupes are dead and large sedans are dying.

    • coupes are not dead and large sedans are nor dying... Look at the benz. (s-coupe, the upcoming e coupe). Bmw will make a model that will be above the 7. The upcoming continental, a7, panamera, cls, 6.. so on.
So its not about coupes and sedans, its just cadillac that sucks. They cant even make a new design language.... forget about them....

      • Don't argue with me just look at the number and it will show you what the market is doing. This is far from my opinion.

There are some larger sedans out there but most are high end and sell in moderate numbers.

Coupe sell in very modest numbers accept for the Camaro and Mustang a and the numbers have been declining every year.

The mid size segment with the Camry, Accord, Malibu and Fusion is only stable segment of sedan out there. The compact is next but it has slipped a little with the CUV sales climbing with a bullet.

The CUV and SUV are the dominate models as of now. The larger sedans only live on high prices and global sales.

What it is about is you do not understand the way the market is or how automakers work and you show it with your disappointment as you can not rationalize it. You know like the kid at toys r us that pitches a fit because he does not understand mom will not spend $200 on a toy that he will forget about in a week.

    • Sedans&coupes are not dead. And they are not planning.
Vice a versa, z germans(and not only) are making more and more sedans and coupe jsut like the suv'es.
So this is a stupid excuse for gm.

      • To late Merkel's Germs will be making Yugo's with that great industrial migration of craftsmen. Buy your German stuff before it becomes what they did to Yugoslavia.

    • I really don't see a way to brighten it up, since all of Cadillac's purported competitors are investing heavily in these segments. Mercedes Benz doesn't even have a development budget for the S-Class, and has a vehicle in almost every segment. BMW wants to build a car positioned above the 7 Series, and created a few niches. I'm having a tough time believing it's the market conditions when all of the competitors are keeping segments on the market.

I would compare Cadillac to Lexus right now, but Lexus just rolled out a grand tourer to compete with the 6-series, and they announced a LS-based CUV to slot above the RX. Lexus and Hyundai are daring greater than Cadillac.

    • Scott, the CT6 and CTS are not "nearly the same size". Huge difference between the two dimensionally inside and out to warrant the former be a full-size sedan shile the latter be a midsize.

As for coupes being dead and starve sedans going away... just ask Mercedes and BMW about that, each of whom has rolled at least one of each over the last 24 months. The segments are only "dead" or "dying" to those who don't compete or don't compete well in those segments... such as Cadillac, Infiniti, Lexus, Acura, Volvo, Lincoln... in other words, the plethora of non-Tier 1 luxury brands.

      • Alex I have seen both and I know the CT6 is a little larger but not that much larger. Add to it the similar styling can make them to the uninformed appear at a glance as very similar.

The greater difference is the packaging inside the CT6 as it is laid out much better.

I get your point but you even have to admit the size in the three sedans right now are pretty close and it would be nice if there was a little more space between them.

As for the others they can add and take away what ever. Their situations is different from Cadillac. They are global models and brands at this point and they can spread that production out all over. Cadillac is still years away from being able to spread out that production as effectively.

Right now their global world is North America, China and the Middle East. What would sell the best in all markets a world class SUV.

What segment is growing faster globally? The SUV.

What would fit these three markets as they all are embracing the again SUV.

What does GM built the best of anyone The SUV.

What Cadillac is making the most money and the most profits. The SUV.

Cadillac is not abandoning the sedans but right now to better fit higher profits the SUV is going to play better to the markets they are in and they can dominate the others.

Now once they build a SUV to dominate the others then they can refocus on the large sedan and be taken seriously.

People do not pay attention to you even if you build the best car if you come in third. But if you build the best SUV and finish first it will reflect on everything you do.

        Work smarter not harder.

Right now North America is the number one priority of Cadillac. If they can win and dominate here where will they? You let them build what this market wants and dominate then they can refocus on the other markets.

Alex answer this. What would have a better chance of being successful at a higher price right now in North America for Cadillac. A world class SUV or a large sedan. Keep in mind we are in six figures here. Which one would sell the best and make the most money? Now we are speaking about Cadillac and not the others. What fits their abilities to dominate the best?

As for sedans hell the Ford Taurus last year was down to just over 50,000 units. That car has declined every year for the last several. The Impala has declined too but not as bad. The LX Chrysler are old but even at fire sale rebates they are still in a steady decline.

Most North Americans have moved to CUV and SUV models. Like I said above this is not my opinion as the numbers bear this out.

What would I like. I would love to see a world class sedan from Cadillac. What do the number say and what would provide them with the best advantage in this market. The SUV.

Now keep in mind this SUV may not be truck based either. We could very well see a Omega based platform made into a Porsche like Cayenne like model.

Imagine a Cayenne like model but with out the weight of nearly 6,000 pounds the Porsche is? Toss in a TT V8 and The sales numbers would be great and the profits would be at least 18% or even more.

You know the market well and you too still need to think outside that GM box we all are guilty of thinking in. These new cats in charge are not GM and they will be doing some things much different.

        • What's the over/under that JdN and Uwe are still w/ GM past 2018?

50/50? Whatever shares they got on the way in will have vested by then.
Dealer body is growing tired. Management's growing impatient.

It's going to be hard for the grand plan to take root, when things are starting to fray - from dealership agreements, to marketing, to slow product development.

A lot of us would like to see this work. But things are looking a little wobbly these days.

    • Large sedans will always be with us. Benz and BMW haven't given up due to the fat profit margins. But everyone wants an SUV/cross over body style. Small, medium and large cars aren't going away and the next oil spike will prove that. Meanwhile, Caddy needs a real flagship unless they want to be Lincoln.

    • I currently have a 2002 DTS. The advertised dimensions for the CT6 are exactly the same. Should be way more roomy than a CTS. The local Cad dealer loaned me a CTS recently and it's MUCH smaller! Now if Cadillac will just get the CT6 in the store so we can touch and drive we'll know for sure.

  • SAW the ct6 AT THE CAR SHOW. ALL I CAN SAY IS GARBAGE. CHEAP UNINSPIRED INTERIOR, DULL EXTERIOR.

    • You may want to wait and just see what is true here first before anyone wets their pants.
      This could be wrong.

Even if it is true you need to consider that what may be coming.

We could be seeing a Omega based SUV that is done in a way like a Porsche Cayenne. These have been big sellers with big prices even at 6,000 pounds.

Now think about a Omega platform sport SUV that would be as large as the Porsche but come in at 4500 pounds with a DOHC TT V8.

Benz and BMW have nothing to challenge that.

We are not just going to get some Chevy truck make over here.

  • Maybe the vehicle above the CT6 will be a more appealing design crossover....or sedans are just died.

  • Way back in 198something I saw the Honda Wagavon. I was like HEY... check THAT out. A car that was little taller than longer. My brother saw it, wanted it, but it was discontinued when he was ready. He instead got the Eagle Summit Wagon... which was all that the Wagavon was... but better. When it came time for me to replace my Honda Civic I got the similar Plymouth Colt Vista Wagon. That car humiliates the current Honda Fit for size and space. It's not contest.

Ever since that car I've never looked at sedans. Every time I do I'm like this is LOW and CRAMPED. I don't need a full blown SUV tank (Tahoe, shudder) but even these little 'taller' cars beat their sedan cousins hands down. I mean I'd need someone to explain to my why I'd ever get a Verano over Encore. They're basically the same car but one is easier to get into and roomier.

What I'm trying to say is that I'm amazed it's taken this long for sedans to fade. I was kinda getting it by 1986ish.

  • 'Cadillac scraps large flagship sedan in favor of SUVs and Crossovers'

    *Sigh*

This world is not what it used to be.

  • Ah.

So first DeNysschen touts the C1XX platform for even more upcoming CUVS, now the true S-Class fighter gets cancled.

What does that leave? A "flagship" sedan that while great, won't win any comparison tests with what's supposed to be Cadillac's competitors. Crossovers that will, more or less, be re-bodied versions of lesser GM CUVs.

  • The CT8 is not dead it is under going a name change. It will be the ATE. Look for a announcement shortly.

  • Give them a top tier truck. They should offer a pickup placed above the Denali ‘Ultimate’. 3.0TT, 4.2 V8 TT, 6.2 LT4. Could have rolled it out prior to the Chevy and GMC fullsize trucks make the switch to aluminum body panels.

MRC suspension with adjustable ride heights, make it the truck flagship for extensive aluminum body-work and multimaterial frame, offer 2+2 seating as an option, give it all the tech Cadillac has in offer in the CT6 and all the tech they have on offer for the truck lineup. Full sliding rear window, full pana-roof with sliding sun roof, power running boards, dem rims, top leather and suedes with lots of interior colour configurations.

    • I would give you a thumbs-down, but I wouldn't put it past Cadillac. Heck, why don't we look for an announcement saying Cadillac's subcompact sedan is going FWD/AWD?

      • Can't thumbs-down because it would make a ton of money and fund more low production offerings.

Transaction prices of trucks have been steadily on the rise, and luxury truck offerings are extremely hot items which leads to those higher transaction prices. Huge profit margins on trucks, even more in the luxury segment. If trucks and SUVs make Cadillac wildly profitable, it allows for them to build things like a mid-engine super car, and continue to build the V Series models. With those huge profit margins maybe they can revisit the CT8 in 5 years time, by then the market may have shifted back to wanting sedans.
