Apple CarPlay Bringing More People To General Motors Brand Dealerships

There’s no getting around that Apple CarPlay is a winner. And combining it with a new vehicle sale makes it into a clearcut advantage for a dealership sales person, especially when a company is first to introduce it.

That’s exactly what General Motors has done with Apple CarPlay, making Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac among the first vehicles to implement the technology earlier this year. According to Tech Times, dealerships have seen a healthy traffic increase thanks to the implementation of the technology.

Being the first to implement Apple CarPlay has given GM a limited-time competitive advantage, as other brands race to follow suit and gear their vehicles with not only CarPlay, but Android Auto as well. In fact, it’s interesting to hear dealer principals stating that consumers are coming in because they love the idea of having the same operating system in their car that they do in their smartphone.

“We’ve had people coming in because they’ve heard about it, and once they see it, they really do like it because it mirrors the look and feel of the devices they use. It’s helping to close the deal once they see it,” says Chris Hemmersmeier, chief executive of the Jerry Seiner Dealerships chain.

Combining Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, OnStar and its suite of services, plus loads of active safety technology is appealing to the right crowd. After all, millennials are all about their “technology and stuff.”

  • THINKING OUT LOUD DEPT:

I don't believe Apple should make its own cars. I believe Apple should join forces with a weakened car brand and 'fix' it in exchange for said company's massive global infrastructure.

Suppose GM and Apple co-designed future electric cars? If foot traffic has increased due to something as small as CarPlay -- just imagine what certain GM/Apple co-designed/co-branded cars could do for GM?

I know that's a little shocking at first, but Chevy has its work cut out to impress me that their design is 'top notch'. That's not because they suck at design -- but because of branding. But if there was an 'Apple' trimline to a Trax, say, foot traffic would explode. That is: if Apple didn't mind co-branding -- why should you?

For instance: should you buy the Honda, the Toyota, or the GM/Apple?

Honda, any day of the week.

Besides, if Apple didn't mind co-branding (and they would enough to NOT do it), who says Apple has my best interests at heart?

They are a faceless multinational corporation and cannot be trusted. Co-branding doesn't magically make them more lovable or acceptable in my eyes, and ANY corporation that cultivates a personality cult is unworthy of my time or my business.

  • I'm still pissed they are leaving the 2015 Chevy owners out in the cold with a MyLink system that is basically a Large screen radio. Why they don't roll out their promised Appstore or do a flash upgrade to allow us to use Carplay is beyond me. Their BS excuses are just that, the radio in my 2015 Chevy Impala can be updated! The iPhone does all the heavy lifting with carplay so all we need for them to do is update older models to use it.
