2016 Cadillac CT6 PHEV Uses 2016 Chevrolet Volt Battery Pack

You may have noticed that the 2016 Cadillac CT6 PHEV battery shares the same 18.4 kWh power output as the Cadillac ELR (and the Chevrolet Volt) EREV models. But their configurations differ greatly, as does the way the batteries are used.

To learn how, Autoblog decided to ask Cadillac to set things straight.

Unfortunately Cadillac is keeping things quiet for now on the technical schematics, but the battery pack does consist of the new, 192 prismatic pouch cell battery pack as seen in the 2016 Chevrolet Volt. That said, the battery will behave differently than what’s seen in the Volt and ELR, thanks to a two-motor Electric Variable Transmission, which uses three planetary gears, and is mated to a 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder engine — sending power to the rear wheels, with the combined output between the engine and battery coming in at 335 hp and a 432 lb-ft of torque — which is more twisting force than the current range-topping 400 hp, 400 lb-ft twin-turbo 3.0L V6 model coming out, as well. But for more details, it looks like we’re going to have to wait and see. Now, about a CT6-V-Series model…

  • If this is the same system as in the Volt/ELR for this vehicle, a 50 mile electric driving range doesn't seem near enough if Cadillac wants to play and compete with the Tesla folks. Still a great combo of a drive system but please boost the electric miles that can be driven please! Will this be marketed as an electric vehicle, or a gas vehicle? It's hard to do both well. My opinion (for whatever it's worth): give the car a well over 200 plus mile electric range with the gas configuration still at hand, and then compete electrically against Tesla and the other big electric players, and show them who is boss! You can do it GM/Cadillac (and other GM affiliates), so why don't you? There is a market for this, there really is! Don't let someone else do this first and then have to play the catch up game later. You have played this game for too long already. Yes, like Valiance states above, make the others concerned...
