From 1915 through 1996, General Motors operated North Tarrywown Assembly plant in the Westchester County town of Sleepy Hollow, New York — previously known as North Tarrytown. The 96-acre property has been abandoned since 1996, but it soon will be redeveloped for residential and retail use.
According to lohud, Diversified Realty Advisors and SunCal paid $39.5 million just before Christmas for the property — today known as Lighthouse Landing — that housed the plant. In the ensuing months, the former industrial site will be transformed into 1,177 residential units, 135,000 square feet of retail space (including a cinema and an “urban market”), a 140-room hotel, and a 16.1-acre waterfront park.
“This is Sleepy Hollow turning permanently from its industrial past,” said Sleepy Hollow Mayor Ken Wray. “In many, many ways it’s going to shape the future of the village. It feels really good to have GM in our rear view mirror.”
We wonder if Mayor Wray’s comments would have been different were he running the city during the time that the plant was pumping out cars left and right and employing the 2,100 workers. But we digress.
But the model is still dead last in its competitive set.
