GM India Sales Down 37 Percent To 4,413 Vehicles In September 2014

General Motors India sold 4,413 new Chevrolet vehicles in September 2014, down 37 percent compared to the 7,048 units sold in September 2013.

“There is some positive movement in the market due to the festival season and new entries. However, the complete recovery of the automobile industry is still some time away,” said Balendran Paramu, Vice President of communications, General Motors India.

To note, the 4,413 sold units in September 2014 include 143 units of exported vehicles, which made their maiden voyage to Chile. On an individual model basis, the 4,413 vehicles sold are made up of 1,166 units of the Chevrolet Sail, 1,149 units of the Tavera, and 1,139 units of Beat (Spark). We should also note that GM India doesn’t break out sales results per model, and the above results leave 959 units that likely include the Captiva, Cruze, and (original) Spark.

  • They'd better figure a way out to cut costs and sell them more competitively. India is too important to give up on now.

    • I also would like to add, that we do not need the sail. What we need is the sonic hatch and sonic sedan. Plus get the trax here, along with the Cadillac models, at least start with the ATS sedan. The Germans ( Mercedes, BMW and Audi) are making big inroads here. GM is wasting a good opportunity here.

  • India is the MOST important emerging market due to population, rapid development and it's wide use of the English language-a plus for any US auto maker.
Also, India does not require free ride JV's meaning larger long term profit. Because of this, GM must develop a solid India plan that includes Chevy, Caddy and Vauxhall (more familiar to Indian shoppers than Opel or Buick due to the brand's UK roots).
