We’ve seen several spy shots of 2016 Malibu prototypes which have revealed the new car’s dramatically different styling approach. However none have been taken as up close and personal as these latest photos from TFLCar, who spotted the redesigned mid-size sedan out testing in the Colorado Rockies.
Just as we pointed out when we saw earlier photos of the Malibu successor, the car appears a touch longer, wider and lower. There is also an obvious fastback-like shape to the rear of the vehicle and a sleeker overall look.
Even though it’s covered in black cladding and we have yet to see photos of the interior, we think this prototype already looks more premium and upmarket than the car it will eventually replace. Many have also said the Malibu is a little tight on the inside and it appears Chevrolet has addressed this problem with the new car.
It’s still not entirely clear what’s in store for Chevy’s new midsizer, but we’re expecting General Motors’ and Ford’s nine-speed automatic transmission to find its way into the car along with smaller four-cylinder turbocharged engines, start/stop technology and a hybrid system as an option.

Please come in a legitimate conventional hybrid option like a Toyota Camry Hybrid or a Ford Fusion Hybrid.
This is appearing to look a lot like the Ford Fusion which I absolutely hate. GM should've improved the current 2015 model by enhancing the exterior here and there, sticking it on the larger E2XX Platform, and refining the drivetrain. With that said, I shall wait until the camo comes off for final judgement. Lastly, GM should definitely keep the 2.0t and 2.5i in the Malibu, but a hybrid and diesel should be added. Active Grille Shutters should be standard on all models. Stop/Start should be standard on all models excluding the diesel. Regenerative Braking should come standard with the eAssist package. Key weight should range from about 3,300lbs to 3,650lbs depending on which model you get.
1.5t eAssist (VVT, SIDI, and IVVL) with 195HP and 205LB-FT (48 City and 45 Highway)
2.3CDTi I4 (VVT and IVVL) with 210HP and 330LB-FT (37 City and 46 Highway)
2.5L I4 (VVT, SIDI, and IVVL) with 200HP and 195LB-FT (29 City and 42 Highway)
2.0t I4 (VVT, SIDI, and IVVL) with 280HP and 300LB-FT (27 City and 36 Highway)
9-Speed Automatic
It reminds me of a longer Chrysler 200 but with a large greenhouse. I also see shades of Nissan, but think that may just be due to camo.
Chevy needs a hit or they will soon, in mid size, fall behind Optima, Sonata and 200.
Pretty hard to tell styling from the spy shots - but the rear end reminds me of an Olds Aurora. From what I can see here - I think I like my '13 Bu better!
