Opel Adam To Debut 1.0 Liter Three-Cylinder Engine At Geneva Motor Show

Opel will bring an updated Adam to the Geneva Motor Show in March, sporting a new three-cylinder turbocharged engine and a new six-speed gearbox.

The 1.0 liter Ecotec three-cylinder engine will come in two different configurations, a 90 horsepower version and a 115 horsepower version. Both of the engines deliver the same maximum torque of 122 lb-ft from 1, 800 rpm, making it more torquey and more powerful than the larger 1.4 or 1.2 liter engines currently on offer in the Adam.

In the Adam, the three-cylinder motor is paired with a standard start/stop system helping it achieve 54.7 mpg U.S. and emit just 99 g/km of C02.

A new six-speed gearbox, which Opel says provides shorter, easier shifts, is sending power to the front wheels. The new unit is smaller and lighter, weighing just 81 lbs.

In addition to the all-new hardware, the Adam will debut new body and roof colors at Geneva. In total, seven new body colors and 4 new roof colors will be added to the palette, giving the Adam 18 exterior paint options and six roof colors.

Inside, the Adam will get five new seat fabrics, seven new cabin decors, four new interior colors, one new headliner and two new interior mirror colors.

The Opel Adam with the 1.0 liter Ecotec engine will go on sale late this spring, with production set to commence in the summer. There is no word on pricing, though official figures will most likely be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show on March 6.

  • Why doesn't GM U.S. get fancy engines like this? 1.0L Turbo I3 125HP/135FT-LBS, 1.2L Turbo I3 140HP/155FT-LBS, 1.4L Turbo I4 175HP/190FT-LBS, 1.6L Turbo I4 215HP/230FT-LBS, 1.8L Turbo I4 240HP/285FT-LBS and a 2.0L Turbo I4 280HP/305FT-LBS. These should be the next generation Ecotec engines for GM in The U.S. VVT, SIDI and iVVL in all. More power than what they replace. The CAFE Standards are coming and we need more efficient engines. We will see a limited use of V6's and V8's as well (unless GM can use VVT, SIDI, AFM, iVVL and an 8 or 10 speed transmission for outstanding fuel economy). . .

  • I agree EvanG, but the 6 and 8 cylinder engines urgently needs those 8 and 10 speed transmission to improve their mpg numbers. For example, the 5.3 V-8 found in the 2014 Silverado, has good mpg for a truck, 16 mpg city & 23 mpg highway. However, with 10 speed throughout the truck line, the numbers could be 19 mpg city & 27 mpg for that said 5.3 V-8.

Hence, those mpg numbers for all of GM V-8s and V-6s could see 4 cylinder mpg numbers with 8, 9 and 10 speed transmissions given to each respective vehicles throughout the GM line up even without electric motors present.
