2016 Opel Insignia Mule Spied

Motor Authority has caught Opel engineers out testing the powertrain for the next generation Opel Insignia.

The photos show a current generation Insignia Sports Tourer with a suspicious black bump on the hood, which MA says is an indicator they are testing a new powertrain.

The next-gen Opel Insignia, due out in 2016, is expected to ride on General Motors upcoming E2XX global vehicle architecture. E2XX will also underpin the next generation of Chevrolet Malibu.  The future line of Buick and Opel models might also pull design features and styling cues from the well-received Monza concept.

  • I hope lessons have been learned from the errors of the current generation Epsilon based midsize sedans! Now's the opportunity for GM to really knock these sedans out of the park!

  • Oh stop with the lessons learned BS. I get so tired of people who complain and have no idea of all of the facts or what is going on.

The car was built to the point they could afford back then. GM today has the funding to properly fund the development and address all the areas they could not afford in the past.

GM has always known how to build a car they just could not fund all areas as well as they would have liked too.

The F body program manager said back then the interiors always failed due to the fact they x amount of money and when building a performance car the engine and suspension got the bulk of the funds and what they had left went to the interior.

the E2XX is why I have been saying do not get too worked up over the Malibu as it is a short term model in the present form. It is the bridge from the older model to the new one and they are just buying time with it.

You will see a major jump in quality and weight loss here. You will see a change as great as the old CTS to the new CTS.

  • When is Buick going to start their "transformation?" I really want:

    Verano Sedan/3\5-Door Hatch
    Regal Sedan/Wagon/Coupe/Convertible
    LaCrosse Flagship Sedan
    Encore Small CUV
    Anthem CUV
    Enclave

  • Soon as you have seen peeks of a couple models already in the Holden Ad and Opel Show cars. 2015-2016-2017 should deliver a lot of new product.

  • Reuss says he wants a good looking /fun to drive wagon for US. Looks fine to me! Would need a 6-speed to really be fun.

  • I would expect we may see a Regal and a Cadillac wagon at some point. Both will be in small numbers and have be bases on a wagon that is selling in Volume in Europe. The higher price will be needed for the wagons to cover the lower volume here.

The Malibu is a tough one as to sell it cheap enough there would be too little volume to support it. Now there may be room for a 5 door hatch here. I know it is not a big jump from a wagon but the Malibu Maxx sold better than expected and had a little more sportiness to it that attracted buyers in America.

The reality is a taller more truck like vehicle will sell better in America. One that should have done better was the HHR SS as it is a true blast to drive and very easy to load and haul with using a taller roof. The HHR itself proved the vehicle concept out sold anything a Cobalt wagon could muster but the SS added the sport fun that was lacking.

I own a HHR SS and I bought it mostly because of how I felt after I drove one. I was not a HHR fan and hated Turbo 4 cylinders but I drove the SS and was amazed at how well it drove and rode. Note the Suspension was tuned by Mark Stielow of GM who has done many of their prime performance cars including the latest Z/28. He fix a average suspension to make it handle like a sports car. Add in the Turbo Eco and you have a practical car with good MPG and a blast to drive.

I added the GMPD turbo upgrade GM offered and now have right at 300 HP. It is fun to jump on it and surprise a Mustang or Honda as you pull away. I had one VETEC guy who to this day has to wonder how I drove away from him. I only wished I could have shown him I had over 300 pounds of Soap Box Derby car, tools and pop up canopy in the back too.

The thing that hurt the SS was the fact it came right at the time GM has no money for promotion. They had one hand out card for the dealer and that was it. There was no TV, no magazine advertising or any real promotion other than the appearance intro at Woodward Cruise.

Ever since I bought this vehicle I continue to have people tell me they like how I modified my car only to tell them it is the way GM built it. Also other laugh at me about the SS emblems till I open the hood and then they say I never knew they did that. As I pull away I like to roll into the gas and light the tires up at 40 MPH just to show it really works.

I would love a sport wagon with real power but even then if it is car like I fear it may just never click here. The buying public has changed and is not the same as Europe. Our only hope is to share in small numbers what the get.
