Through 2016, Opel is introducing a new Ecotec engine family into its vehicles. It first started with an all-new SIDI (spark ignition, direct injection) 1.6L turbocharged engine that made its debut in the new Opel Cascada convertible. And now that same engine is to be found in the rakish Opel Astra GTC hot-hatch.
Pushing 170 horsepower and 191.7 lb-ft (260 Nm) of torque, the new engine pushes out 22 percent more twisting force than the outgoing 1.6L turbo mill, while efficiently consuming a combined cycle rating of 6.1 liters fuel per 100 km (a 15 percent reduction) when equipped to a six-speed manual transmission and Start/Stop technology and emits 143 g/km CO2.
Being of the turbocharged variety, the new engine’s peak torque is available between 1,650 and 3,200 rpm and offers up to 280 Nm due to an overboost function, which comes in handy when passing. The power is also enough to push the Astra GTC from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.6 seconds and sprints from 80 to 120 km/h in 9.3 seconds in fifth gear.
The Opel Astra GTC with the new 1.6 SIDI Turbo is available with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission and can be ordered now for an entry-level price of 23,850 euros (RRP incl. VAT in Germany).

GM needs to give this to the Verano here in the US as well.
Put this on the Cruze too!
Slip in that 2.0 turbo from the ATS and bring that baby over here!
Well shy of the maximum 197 h.p. and 221 lb-ft I've seen for this engine, but still nice numbers. The Cruse desperately needs this as the basic upgrade engine (1.4T, 1.6T), and it would be awesome in a Sonic SS (or could use another nomenclature). And yes, the GTC itself should be here in NA, but it's not gonna happen.
Seems like the 1.4T should be the base, and this be the up level engine. Surprised at the mid-8 second time though. I was truly hoping to see it in the 7.8-8.1 time at least. I wonder if the gearing may be tallish for economies sake.
Oh well...here's to hoping the Cruze gets a variant of the 2.0T. I'm really proud that they introduced the diesel and the reception of it in the press!
This engine really needs to be offered in the North American Cruze, especially since it's fitting with the old 1.6 liter iTi (and 1.8 liter) petro engines in other markets.
I think Chevy better make a quick move on the Cruze in power and transmission wise!! I kinda fear for the 2014 Corolla which has already debuted with 140 hp and maybe with 45mpg with their Eco model
I am not too worried about the new Toyota. It still doesn't have any torque. And it will be more expensive while getting the same mpg.
because it says it might get either 40-45mpg on their LE eco
