NAIAS 2011: Chevrolet Reveals Sonic Z-Spec Concept Along With Sedan And Hatch Variants

If you recall SEMA 2010, you will recall the concept cars such as the Chevy Cruze Z-Spec and Chevy Volt Z-Spec concepts. On the same front, Chevrolet rolled out the striking Sonic Z-Spec concept, dripping with hot-hatch glory.

Playing the same note as Cruze and Volt Z-Spec concepts, the Sonic Z-Spec combines factory and aftermarket parts — showing the potential and appeal Chevy’s all-new subcompact has with the tuner crowds against the likes of the Honda Fit and Ford Fiesta. We would even go as far to say that the Sonic Z-Spec is more aggressive looking than the Chevy Aveo RS Concept that was unveiled during last year’s NAIAS.

According to Jim Federico, the Sonic’s VLE — the vehicle is about 500 pounds lighter than the Chevrolet Cruze (which would put the Sonic around 2,600 pounds), yet features the same engine options and six-speed manual transmission as the Cruze. He continued to boast about the potency the 138 horsepower, 1.4L boosted Ecotec engine and six-speed has in such a small and light package. Notably, the horsepower rating also slots above that of the Ford Fiesta and Honda Fit.

During the press conference, GM North America President Mark Reuss was quick to point out that the Sonic’s second row is roomier than that of the acclaimed Fiesta, and more cargo space than the Honda Fit. On the safety side – a whopping ten airbags — blasting away the Fiesta’s six airbags to lead the segment by a long shot. Additionally, it is the only subcompact built within the boundaries of the United States. What’s not to like?
