Swedish-based automaker Volvo has just unveiled the 2025 Volvo EX30, an all-new electric crossover that will be positioned as an entry-level EV upon release. Currently, General Motors doesn’t have a premium model that would directly compete with this new all-electric vehicle.
Holding the distinction as Volvo’s smallest crossover to date, the upcoming EX30 boasts two unique powertrain configurations – one designed with efficiency in mind and the other designated for performance. The single-motor variant gets 268 horsepower and an NMC extended-range battery that delivers up to 275 miles of range on a full charge, while the dual-motor variant yields 422 horsepower and clears the 0-to-60 mph sprint in 3.4 seconds.
As is expected from a premium vehicle, the Volvo EX30 also boasts a selection of next-gen technologies, notable among them being Park Pilot Assist. This feature uses a new 3D user interface to allow drivers to navigate all types of parking spaces, and will operate the throttle, brakes, and steering to provide an exemplar parking experience.
Of course, as a result of its positioning in Volvo’s lineup, the electrified EX30 is designed to be an accessible vehicle in terms of pricing. In fact, Volvo claims that the entry-level EV will feature a starting MSRP of $36,145, including freight and delivery charges.
“The fully electric EX30 might be our smallest ever SUV, but it’s a big deal for our customers and a big deal for us as a company,” Volvo Chief Executive Jim Rowan was quoted as saying. “We like to say the EX30 is small yet mighty, because it delivers on everything you’d want from a Volvo but in a smaller package. Like any Volvo, it’s an outstanding product which is safe and designed around people and their needs.”
It’s worth noting that a Cross Country variant of the EX30, with an elevated ride height and a more rugged appearance, will become available next year.
As previously mentioned, The General currently doesn’t have any electric vehicle positioned to compete with the new Volvo EX30. While a smaller Cadillac electric crossover is on the horizon – positioned under the current Cadillac Lyriq – it’s expected that the upcoming Caddy EV will be larger than the EX30, or roughly the size of the Cadillac XT4.
Furthermore, the upcoming Buick Electra E5 will be a compact EV, which is even bigger than the aforementioned sub-Lyriq EV.
In other Volvo-related news, the Swedish-based automaker recently revealed its new 2024 Volvo EX90 flagship crossover, which will serve as a competitor to the Cadillac Lyriq.

Working at a Volvo store, it's funny how Volvo hasn't given us much more info than what is here (and carscoops). This EX30 comes in exactly 3.5" longer than my Bolt EV and about 2.6" shorter than the Bolt EUV. From what we are seeing so far, this looks promising as a Bolt replacement for me if I can't find an EV sedan (car) in my budget. However, for the base EX30 being just over 36 grand, the lease better be very aggressive or it will be a no-go for me. I haven't seen (in person) the inside of this EX30 yet, but I have zero issues with the inside of my Bolt. So for about 8 grand more, I'd have to pass without a very aggressive lease on them. It's still a mini CUV hatch like my Bolt, but at least they won't be sticking the non-painted black plastic all around the wheels. So that's a plus.
But that screen!!!! Huge fail.
MY IMPRESSIONS
01. At First seemed to me a nice design... getting closer... then NOT
02. Well ... it is an EV ... so of course it is NOT for us, BUT the WITHOUT a Grille is Nice
03. The front could have been had Square headlamps instead those complications on Winks
04. The outer mirror is wrongly positioned on door instead at A Pillar Tringle Edge
05. Do not understand much why this split black part on C Pillar, angled would have been better
06. The Rear is the best part of the car, however the upper lamp could match better the lower one at side
07. NOT a much fan of electronics inside a car, NEITHER Tablets, but a minimal Dash seems ok
08. The lower side hole is not necessary, could have been straight
09. it lacks the shark antenna on middle rear roof
10. IF with all those Design Improvements, E50 flexi fuel and € 10 000 new, seems for us OK
11. Paid € 7700 our 2013 Dacia Sandero NEW ... now with 30125 Km, so NO NECESSITY To Change The 4 Wheels
To Another 4 Wheels Transportation ! Sure Dacia Sandero has many Unecessary Design Complications
Exterior & Interior BUT OK ... IF A PRETEND GOD HELPS, We STAY So MORE 20 Years ! E10
Nice looking EV at decent price point. But lack of driver display or hud, and range under 300 miles just isn’t cutting it for me.
Lack of 300 mile range is a no go
DC charging speed is not good enough
back seat is tiny
“ the Swedish-based automaker recently revealed its new 2024 Volvo EX90 flagship crossover, which will serve as a competitor to the Cadillac Lyriq.”
The EX90 is a 3 row SUV and a lot more expensive than the Lyriq.
No direct rival YET. Perhaps one of the upcoming Buick Electra EVs will go against it.
Yeah. The Electra E4 seems like it, but guessing the E4 is probably not as quick as the EX30.
The E4 is for the Chinese market only, seems like, and by accounts, comfort and ride is higher prized there vs off the line performance.
Volvo has become what Buick should be for GM
Hey Dan, When you are ready to replace your Bolt, a new Bolt won't be an option. They will stop building them by the end of this year. Nothing wrong with the Bolt, but the battery configuration isn't the same as the rest of the GM EVs so I guess it won't be efficient to keep offering them. If you like the Bolt and you will need one relatively soon, you could buy one late 2023 and save it for later use. Two reasons: what are the chances of there being another under $30,000 EV with 250 mile range and if the Bolt qualifies for the federal tax break of $3750 or $7500 (?) then it is an unbelievable bargain.
GM replaced the $15,000 Spark with the $22,500 Trax as the least expensive Chevy so I am guessing the next EVs will go up in price also.
Steven B: I already have a 2023 Bolt, and it's my last GM vehicle. Reason? GM has burned too many bridges behind me over the years. This Bolt being killed off only months after I purchased mine was the last straw for me. So I'm not interested in what GM has or will have. I'll be looking for (preferably a car) that is EV, small and under 30 grand. But I do like my Bolt, so maybe instead of trading every two years like I normally do, I will just run this one till it dies in hopes that the SUV/CUV and computer tablet screen fads will pass. But my next vehicle will NOT be a GM.
Barra recently hinted during an interview they are planning to bring the Bolt back as an Ultium based EV in the future.
“ you know, Bolt is something that has built up a lot of loyalty and equity. So I can’t say more because I don’t discuss future product programs, but, you know, it was primarily a move from second generation to third generation. But that’s [an] important vehicle in our portfolio."
Ryssdal responded the same way we would have, saying, "Nudge nudge, wink wink, I guess."
Don’t forget, Volvo is owned by CHINA.
