Stricter Vehicle Emissions Rules Through 2030 And Beyond On The Way, Says EPA

Regulators are set to propose more stringent vehicle emissions rules by March of the 2024 calendar year. The new rules, as proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), will affect vehicles between the 2027 model year through at least the 2030 model year.

Per a recent report from Reuters, which cites a regulatory update from the EPA released earlier in the week, the agency also said that it will propose and finalize new rules covering medium-duty vehicles around the same March timeframe.

Back in December, the EPA overturned a rollback on vehicle emissions rules enacted under President Trump affecting new light-duty vehicles through the 2026 model year. The EPA rules finalized in December require a fleet-wide average fuel consumption rate of 40 mpg by 2026, as opposed to 32 mpg under the Trump-era rollback. Looking ahead, President Biden has backed plans for 50 percent of all new vehicles sold by 2030 as electrified, including both fully electric models and plug-in hybrids.

The latest regulatory changes have led to questions as to how automakers will meet the new goals, especially with regard to the launch of new electric vehicles. The EPA estimates that the benefits of reducing vehicle emissions will outweigh the costs by upwards of $190 billion, with 17 percent of new U.S. vehicles being either all-electric or a plug-in hybrid by 2026.

Not everyone, however, is convinced. Earlier this year, ethanol producers sued to undue the mpg rule changes made in December, saying that they “effectively mandate the production and sale of electric cars rather than cars powered by internal combustion engines.”

Meanwhile, GM has boosted its investments into the development of new electric vehicle and autonomous vehicle technology to $35 billion by 2025. The General is also boosting its EV production capacity to 1 million units in North America by the end of 2025.

  • It will all change if we get a Republican President in 2025. Gas prices will go down and the emissions restrictions will loosen up. We all know this regime is pushing Electric and they think we can just miraculously stop using fossil fuel in 8 years.

  • This is why the industry has made the moves they have to EV.

They can not live on changes every 4 and 8 years and they needed to pick a path where the rules were stable. It has gotten past the point where we can just vote out these regulations. Add in the fact that many activist now occupy the non elected offices for the EPA now are also not a help.

The planning and dealing with these regulations are near impossible for ICE and will even kill some Hybrids. The Cost are also only going to increase with the new designs and added content just to meet these coming numbers.

What really hurts here is the medium duty trucks. This will get ugly.

Add this to the global treatment of ICE in many countries the automakers really have no choice.

    • Trump was very successful at stopping new regs and easing existing ones. Just keep voting Republican for the best chance for freedom!

      • Easier said than done. Too many American don’t know who they are voting for.

Look at the Biden regret today. Most that voted for him would not vote for him now. Yet he did exactly what he said he would do.

School stopped teaching political science and now just tell the kids the government will take care of them.

To be honest this is bigger than one person anymore as globalization is taking on supporters on both sides anymore.

        • Yeah, people are too blind today and will eventually wonder what happened after it’s too late.

          • Yes too many people vote or if they vote how they feel not what they really know way too often.

        • That was my point. Same for the Mits and others on the right that have sold out.

That is why automakers can not afford to keep making changes every time there is an election.

The Dems will lose the next presidential election but 4 years later?

Even when Trump was in there were appointed people in the EPA from Obama that were never replaced and have been trying to enforce the EPA laws as they interpret them not as they were written.

Read up on the RPM act and what all the EPA has done to try to make it illegal to modify a new car even just for racing or off road use. I have been a part of that battle as it affect my job.

          • The part about Obama appointees in the EPA is a true fact. Ruined a decent cooperative working relationship between some of the EPA automotive groups and the domestic manufacturers.

  • " The EPA estimates that the benefits of reducing vehicle emissions will outweigh the costs by upwards of $190 billion," 3 kinds of liars, liars da*n liars, and statisticians.

  • Another transparent attempt by the worthless, painful Biden Administration designed to force suffering American citizens into purchasing an overpriced EV. Not gonna' work Joey ! In a little more than two years you are toast, if we can survive your insanity for that long. Maybe when the House and Senate get cleaned out in November, we can get rid of you earlier by Impeaching you for your crimes.

      • And YOU are one of the naive, underinformed fools the Democraps prey on with their indoctrination and propaganda designed to fool a weak mind like you are afflicted with. Enjoy your pain at the Pump and sky-high Grocery prices moron. Everyone else knows what is going on except for a true dimwit like you just proved yourself to be. Thanks Kotar. ( Is that Hindi for dumass ? )

  • When all is said and done this will be the largest scam and power grab(pardon the pun)ever portrayed on the great people of the United States. It will make the WMDs in Iraq look like a 6yrold just stealing a piece of candy.

  • Another way to force you into an EV. I don’t hate EV’s I just want to drive what I want without some government agency telling me what I have to drive. Just keep voting Republican and we’ll get things back on track and start rolling back this nonsense!

  • Sadly i will disagree with you on voting republican to stop this. There playing on the same team, team power grab and once they have it, they will never release it.

  • Sadly most of these comments really aren’t based in reality!
Look at all the natural disasters that are happening all around the world-period! Then throw in Putin and things get even worse !
It is sad that a lot of these comments are politically based !

    • Since you're clearly a member of the Biden/Democrat cult, it's a shame you are so blinded and indoctrinated by their propaganda and lies and unable to accept truth and facts that everyone else, except you, is aware of. How typical and how irrelevant that makes you. if this fiasco had happened during a Republican Administration and the Republican in the WH had created ridiculous Energy Policies that opened the door to worldwide OIl price-gouging, the comments would have been the same so you can cram your claim of "politically biased".

    • Don’t worry Larry. Adolf Putler will end life as you know it in a Nuclear Holocaust.
Fortunately I’ll be in a safe place to survive & live on.

    • At least that guy had a pair of balls to stand up to the World,UN, NATO, kept our economy in awesome shape, made our nation safe, cheap gas...etc., etc., etc.!
