General Motors ‘ has said its Vehicle Intelligence Platform, a connected electric vehicle architecture that enables over-the-air-updates and other advanced protocols, will be found in most vehicles within its global lineup by 2023.
The Vehicle Intelligence Platform debuted in 2019 and is already found in a variety of GM vehicles, including the Buick Envision, Chevy Corvette, Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL and Cadillac CT4, CT5, Escalade and Escalade ESV. The system, which has also been referred to as Global B, provides the required electrical bandwidth and data processing power to run advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and supports over-the-air updates for the vehicle’s operating system, infotainment and more. Cybersecurity is another key aspect of the Vehicle Intelligence Platform, protecting GM vehicles and their users from data hacking attempts and other cyberattacks.
GM says the Vehicle Intelligence Platform “will be rolled out to 29 additional vehicle models by 2023,” covering the majority of its North American vehicle lineup. The presence of the connected architecture will be critical as the automaker looks to roll out more EVs in the coming years, as the system is key to managing GM’s newly developed wireless battery management system. It will also enable GM to send over-the-air updates to EVs to adjust the battery management system settings, motor settings and other parameters to improve and/or alter the vehicle’s performance remotely.
The platform, which is capable of managing up to 4.5 terabytes of data processing power per hour, also provides the required electrical bandwidth and data processing power to manage a ADAS tech like Super Cruise and the future evolved version of Super Cruise, which is expected to be called Ultra Cruise.
“The critical role of software and its importance to our vehicles, both now and for years to come, cannot be overstated,” GM President Mark Reuss said following the system’s debut back in 2019. “Our new digital vehicle platform and its eventual successors will underpin all our future innovations across a wide range of technological advancements, including EVs and expanded automated driving.”
