A recent survey conducted by car buying and research website CarGurus found that many current and former owners of pickup trucks think the vehicles have become too expensive. Furthermore, a small minority of current pickup truck owners are unlikely to replace it with another, with poor fuel economy the most likely factor to push them away.
The survey found that 68 percent of pickup owners say trucks have become too expensive, while 17 percent are unlikely to replace their pickup with another in the future. Toyota truck owners were the most likely to defect, with 24 percent saying they probably won’t be buying another pickup, while Chevrolet owners are the least likely, with only 11 percent saying they won’t be purchasing another.
Of those who said they would be replacing their trucks with another vehicle type, 42 percent cited poor fuel economy as their reasoning. Another 24 percent said it was because trucks had become too pricy.
It also dug up some interesting findings with regard to brand loyalty. A whopping 70 percent of those surveyed said they would switch to another brand if their current pickup brand of choice were to raise prices by $10,000. Ford buyers are most likely to defect to Ram, but owners of Chevys, Toyotas, and Rams would all flip to Ford. Chevy was the least common answer in this part of the survey.
CarGurus says it surveyed “1,067 current and former pickup truck owners,” for this survey, with 581 currently owning at least one pickup truck and 486 having owned one previously. Among the current pickup truck owners surveyed, 195 owned a Ford, 154 owned a Chevrolet, 106 owned a Toyota and 101 owned a Ram.
The survey company also says that pickup truck owners are currently “feeling the pinch of rising prices, even more so than before.”

Traded in my 2013 GMC Sierra HD for a 2018 Canyon V6, big difference in Fuel Economy and Cost of Ownership and I don't regret the changeover!!
I think the biggest problem is that instead of ordering an option, you have to order a trim level. I am a tech by trade, and one of my big musts is leather seats. Cuz, grease and cloth don't play well with each other. And seat covers aren't my thing. So in order to get leather, they cram all the extra crap down your throat. Then tell you it's the same price as a Sting Ray.
Oh...And part of the problem with MPG, is the corn gas.
Never owned a truck but after seeing my father's fuel costs and cost of the lease, no thanks. And really, I can just use a car and trailer for most of my needs. Even midsized trucks are overkill in many instances. Personally I rely on the tow ratings of the same vehicles, with similar or same drivetrain and suspension, sold on other countries than N.A. ratings since they are artificially low or marked as "not recommended".
These now trucks are just stupid priced. I had a 13 Silverado 5.3 Z71 extended cab I bought new and sold it couple years ago when I was able to sell it for what I had owing on it. Now I drive a paid for loaded 98 Silverado Z71 with 5.7 and the 98 is better on gas and more options go figure. I don't know how people are buying these new truck's I make $70 000 a year and I consider that a average decent wage but maby I'm wrong but there's know way I could walk in buy new truck. Well I shouldn't say that I probably could but I'd be broke all the time living paycheck to paycheck. I got a little bit of money in the bank own a coupe dirtbike's and spend alot of time going to tracks all over Saskatchewan so for me a new truck just can't be done. Plus what a waste of money buying new midas well drive down the highway and toss your money out the window. I'll keep driving my send third and fourth hand trucks rest of my life and sleep good at night not worrying about money. Most trucks here in Saskatchewan Canada are $55 000 and go up from there a dually high country diesel is basically $100 000.
Up $5k from a year ago. Ridiculous. I wouldn't even drive a truck except i have to as I'm a contractor. I laugh because all i see are people in ties driving platinum 150s. Why are you driving a truck? Making up for something else? Quit being a turd and get a car!
Wow! This survey was awhile ago, and still it stays alive. Yes the cost of new trucks just keeps climbing. There just seems to be no stopping it. One can't build the truck they want. One has to purchase "packages", you just can't order the upgrades that you want. I've been buying Chevy trucks since 1970. Back then, you could order a base model and pick and choose any or the options you wanted. Now you get what GM wants you to have. Yeh, $5000.00 increase in one year is nuts. Did your pay go up that much this year? Nope!!!!! What needs to happen, is people who REALLY need trucks, stop buying them. Then maybe, just maybe, things will change. I agree with one writer who sees guys with ties, drive F150 Platinum Editions. 'Nuff already.
I can't believe all the people spending $60,000+ on new trucks plus half of them are women...WTF?
