New Spy Pictures Show 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 Looking For Camaro

Last month, we showed you a teaser image of the upcoming 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 that will take on Chevrolet’s Camaro ZL1. Today, our sister site, Ford Authority, obtained spy photos of the upcoming GT500 that show some aggressive exterior detailing.

The new Shelby GT500 is rumored to have an astounding 772 horsepower from its supercharged flat-plane-crank V8 engine, though recent rumors have suggested that the motor might be of the cross-plane-crank variety. Either way, that would be 122 ponies more than what’s currently on tap from the range-topping 2018 Camaro ZL1 (though Chevy might surprise us with an even more potent Camaro in the not-too-distant future).

But despite the headline-making difference in power, what truly matters is how effectively a sports car puts said power to the ground. Hence, we have a feeling that – despite the Shelby GT500 having a higher power rating – Ford will have a hard time transferring all that power to the ground, thanks to the Mustang’s sub-par architecture (when compared to that of the sixth-gen Camaro).

See the complete gallery of 2020 Shelby G500 spy pictures at Ford Authority. Despite the fact that people on our sister site are Ford fans, they’re pretty nice and have promised to be cordial to our visitors, so don’t be shy and head on over for the gallery.

  • Well, the 2018 GT has come pretty close to the SS at a better price point with the 10spd auto. What 2019 models have to offer remains to be seen but unless the 2020 ZL1 gets the ZR1's LT5, the GT500 may just surpass the current ZL1 1LE. Is there a Z/28 coming? Time will tell but you can't hold the mustang down forever as the new Ford GT super/hyper car shows. Now, how much that costs is a totally different story.

  • "Headline grabbing horsepower" figures mean jack if you can't get the power to the ground and cleanly hook up. The drivetrain (clutch, transmission~auto/man, drive shaft, diff, axles) as well as the interplay with the suspension set up and tyres all have a part to play.

The 2020 ZL1 w/factory 10 spd auto versus a 2020 Shelby GT500 with the same GM/Ford 10 spd auto will be an interesting match up.

  • Latest rumors say even though it will share the 5.2L with the voodoo this “predator” engine will not be a flat plane crank engine.

  • As a past owner of a 1967 Camaro RS and a 1980 Mustang, I like both. And both should have all levels of power from the basic I4 to the supercharged V6 and V8 beasts to kill off any foreign competition, especially the tiny tin-cans from the Asians.
