Opel’s Tina Mueller Departs Brand For German Cosmetics Company

A second high-profile departure has occurred at Opel. The brand’s chief marketing officer, Tina Mueller, has departed the brand for a German cosmetics company, according to The New York Times.

This week, European outlets reported on Mueller’s potential departure for an unnamed company. Now, we know she will head up Germany’s Douglas as its chief executive officer. She will replace Isabelle Parize who is stepping down as CEO. Mueller worked in the cosmetic industry for 20 years before joining Opel in 2013. She has received awards for her brand building and approach to Opel’s marketing.

Under Mueller, Opel launched the Astra K, Opel Insignia Grand Sport, and two crossovers: the Crossland X and Grandland X.

Mueller’s appointment is effective as of November 1. Opel has not announced a successor to Mueller as of this writing. She’s also the second high-profile exit after former Opel CEO, Karl-Thomas Neumann, stepped down as CEO after PSA Groupe acquired the brand.

  • To call Douglas a "cosmetics company" can be misleading.

Douglas is a store chain specialising in cosmetics. Douglas does not produce themselves.

Douglas is one of three store chains controlled by the Kreke family based in Hagen (W!estfalen) located south of Dortmund.

The oldest of those chains is Hussel, specializing in sweets.

The third is Thalia, a chain of bookstores, formerly Montanus.

  • Before joining Opel, Tina Müller worked for Henkel, which is also not really a cosmetics company.

Please allow me to quote from the en.Wikipedia.org article on Henkel:

Henkel AG & Company, KGaA, is a German chemical and consumer goods company headquartered in Düsseldorf, Germany. It is a multinational company active both in the consumer and industrial sector. Founded in 1876, the DAX 30 company is organized into three globally operating business units (laundry & home care, beauty care, adhesive technologies) and is known for brands such as Loctite, Persil, and Fa amongst others.

  • Further reading tells me, that my above shown knowledge is outdated -- in 2014, the Douglas Holding sold all store chains except Douglas cosmetics. And the headquarters are no longer in Hagen, but in Düsseldorf. They claim to be the largest cosmetics dealer in Europe. Their press release on recruiting Müller is here corporate.douglas.de/en/media/press-releases/douglas-appoints-tina-mueller-ceo/
