The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV‘s German cousin, the Opel Ampera-e, recently went through its round of crash tests by the Euro NCAP and it was a bit disappointing.
The Ampera-e walked away with just a four-star rating and fell short of other vehicles tested that earned five stars. While the Ampera-e performed well overall in crashworthiness, the European organization docked it points for not offering a rear seatbelt reminder.
General Secretary of Euro NCAP Michiel van Ratingen said, “we know how effective these reminders are at promoting seatbelt use, so this is clearly a big step backward on Opel’s part.” The new Opel Insignia Grand Sport offers rear seatbelt reminders as an option—not standard equipment.
However, the Ampera-e was applauded for its automatic emergency braking system, which effectively avoided or mitigated crashes well in all test scenarios. The Opel Ampera-e continues to roll out across Europe this year, but the first vehicles have already been delivered in the electric car’s launch market of Norway.
