The historic General Motors Global Technical Center is in for a massive overhaul with the announcement of new studio space. The GM Design Center will double its amount of studio space with an expansion surrounding the iconic Design Dome Auditorium.
It’s the final component to a multi-year, $1 billion investment at the facility, which will also include a viewing patio to connect the new building with the current space. The project is also one of the largest undertaken at the site, which was named a National Historic Landmark in 2014.
Construction on the project itself began in 2015, but the studio space construction will begin in mid-2018. First, a new parking structure will be completed, followed by the new building that will house the latest design technology and modern spaces.
GM has also completed work on a new vehicle engineering center, alternative energy center and a pre-production operation center as part of the $1 billion investment at the site. When all is completed, the total amount of new space will total 360,000 additional square feet.

Is anyone paying attention to this.
This is a major investment in the future.
Yes, we use to call it Empire Building .
It would have been awesome if they would have just used the original proposals for the Tech Center to plan the new buildings. Updated, but still the original Vision and style of the Tech Center. There were several buildings that were scrapped in the final design.
