For drivers looking to break into the business of Lyft, but don’t own a qualified vehicle, General Motor’s partnership with the ride-sharing company has reached Denver, Colorado. The Express Drive program will allow qualified drivers to rent a GM vehicle weekly for rates starting at $135.
According to The Denver Post, the city has been on a waiting list to launch the service but was pushed back after GM was unable to track down a vacant parking lot to house the vehicles.
“They (Lyft drivers) are very upset that we haven’t launched yet,” said Lindsey Whiddon, general manager of GM’s Maven team in Denver. “There is a waiting list” for cars, she added.
The vehicles are all newer than 2016 model years and offer drivers the ability to use it for work and personal use, starting at around $135 per week. Insurance and routine maintenance are included with the weekly rental fee, but gasoline is on the driver. A $150 deposit is also required but is returned after the rental period expires.
Lyft drivers can further reduce this rate based on the number of rides given in an Express Drive vehicle. After 63-84 rides, the rental rate drops to $0. Half of the eligible rides must be during peak Lyft hours, though.
Express Drive launched last year in Chicago, Illinois, and has been popping up across various U.S. cities as GM’s personal mobility service, Maven, continues to expand.
