Confirmed: GM To No Longer Provide Updates For OnStar RemoteLink Mobile App

General Motors will no longer provide updates for its OnStar RemoteLink mobile app. Instead, the automaker will focus on its myChevrolet, myCadillac, myBuick and myGMC apps, which were recently overhauled to include features from the RemoteLink app.

The myChevrolet app will replace OnStar RemoteLink app for Chevy owners

OnStar RemoteLink provides remote vehicle access and information services, such as door lock/unlock, remote start, and fuel range, among other features. Initially released in 2010, the app delivered many industry firsts and represented a leap forward in the connected vehicle space. Meanwhile, the four individual brand apps were redesigned to inherit the RemoteLink functionality earlier this year.

Despite plans to no longer update RemoteLink, GM tells us that the app will remain available for download in the Apple App Store and in Google Play, at least for the time being.

  • The RemoteLink app is still necessary for a few vehicles, including 2011 MY Saab 9-5 cars.

I don't think it's ironic that it's approximately five years (to the day) that the 9-5 shipped. It sounds like GM's contract to support the car may have expired.

It's a common infrastructure, so there shouldn't be any issues immediately.

  • I hope they'll add number of gallons of fuel to the "Vehicle Status" section of the myCadillac and myChevrolet apps. For those who keep a minimal amount of gas in the tank and drive mostly on electricity, it's handy to know exactly how many gallons are in the tank of our Volt or ELR. (I like to keep about two gallons of gas in the car as an emergency backup.) The cars report the miles of range available in gas mode, but not the number of gallons of fuel left. The OnStar RemoteLink app is the only way I can find that out. The website and the newer apps don't list that information.

  • No!! I actually enjoy using the RemoteLink to use it on my Chevy and Buick just so that I don't have to jump between apps! Now that they do it I have to download two separate apps and it's cumbersome!

    • I have a '14 Corvette and a new '16 CTS, just loaded the new mycadilac app and can access both vehicles easily from the same site.

  • The location service on my buick stinks compared to remote link. It shows the car location but no address bar. You have no idea what town or state the car is in. Example : map shows the car parked on state st. State st. In what town or state. Also you cannot send the map to satellite like remote link. So it is bascally worthless. I like to know where my car is when being used.
