2017 Opel Ampera-e Receives Official 500 Kilometer Range Rating

Opel took to the 2016 Paris Motor Show to showcase its latest pride and joy: the 2017 Opel Ampera-e. But, the brand also delivered the news everyone has been waiting for surrounding the brand’s 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV twin.

Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann revealed the 2017 Ampera-e will arrive with an NEDC official rating of 500 kilometers. That’s roughly 310 miles for us Yanks, and it easily bests the 2017 Bolt EV’s rating of 238 miles.

Briefly, so there is a lack of confusion, the 2017 Ampera-e is capable of longer range due to how the Opel and Chevrolet Bolt EV are rated by their respective government agencies. You can read more about that here.

Anyway, with a 500 km range, it bests any EV currently on the market by at least 100 km. But, Opel is quick to point out the NEDC range does not truly reflect typical driving behavior, and also provided Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure) driving cycle numbers.

The WLTP range comes in at greater than 380 km, or 226 miles, much closer to the 2017 Bolt EV’s EPA rating. Opel says this figure is a more accurate depicter of what consumers will experience in varying driving conditions.

Opel’s first mass-market EV will arrive next year, following the launch of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV by the end of this year.

  • Looks like there's a typo in the mileage figure for the WLTP range -- presumably that's supposed to be 236 miles, right?
