General Motors now has eleven facilities with Energy Star certification for superior energy efficiency from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The developmental efforts have lead to a smaller carbon footprint.
“It makes good business sense to pursue a greener product in every segment of the value chain,” said Al Hildreth, GM’s global energy manager. “This includes the areas that support our business and keep our company running optimally, like our efficient warehouses, IT centers and office buildings.”
In order to earn the Energy Star certification, the buildings must have a better energy efficiency rating than 75 percent of similar buildings nationwide, and meet strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA.
Below is a list of the eleven buildings, which is comprised of seven distribution centers, a global headquarters office, and three IT innovation office centers.
There are some interesting notes on how the IT centers conserve energy. For instance, the center in Chandler, Arizona uses solar energy to supply power for 9 percent of its monthly energy use. The center in Roswell, Georgia utilizes an advanced intelligent boiler control in order to optimize energy efficiency, and the center in Austin, Texas limits the operation of workplace and conference room lighting to 50 percent of the maximum output.
