2016 Chevrolet Camaro V6, SS Fuel Economy Released

Chevrolet has released fuel economy figures for the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro in six- and eight-cylinder engine configurations. Let’s start with the 3.6L V6.

Model City fuel economy (MPG) Highway fuel economy (MPG)
2016 Camaro I4 Turbo(Manual): Not Yet Released
2016 Camaro I4 Turbo(Manual): Not Yet Released
2016 Camaro V6 (Manual): 18 27
2016 Camaro V6 (Automatic): Not Yet Released
2016 Camaro SS/V8 (Manual): 15 25
2016 Camaro SS/V8 (Automatic): 17 28

2016 Camaro V6

The optional 3.6L V6 LGX engine is rated at 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway when mated to the six-speed manual transmission.

The numbers are 1 mpg more in the city and (surprisingly) 1 mpg less on the highway compared to the outgoing fifth-gen Camaro and its 3.6L V6 LFX engine. Chevy has yet to release fuel economy figures for the 2016 Camaro with the 3.6L V6 LGX paired with the automatic transmission.

Onwards to the V8 in the 2016 Camaro SS model.

2016 Camaro SS (V8)

The 6.2L V8 LT1 engine in the 2016 Camaro SS sees significant improvements in fuel economy compared to the 6.2L V8 LS3 in the outgoing fifth-gen SS. When paired to the 6-speed automatic transmission, the 2016 Camaro SS achieves 17 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway.

That is a jump of 2 mpg in the city and 4 on the highway, while also making more power than its predecessor. And that’s not to mention that the V8-powered 2016 Camaro SS also attains 1 mpg higher fuel economy than the manual-tranny 2016 Camaro V6 on the highway and only get 1 mpg less in the city.

But the story isn’t as good for the 6.2L LT1 with the 6-speed manual: the 2016 Camaro SS is rated at 15 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. That is only a 1 mpg improvement on the highway compared to the 24 mpg seen on the fifth-gen Camaro SS with a manual gearbox, while the city rating stay the same.

2.0L Turbo I4 LTG: Not Yet Released

GM has not yet released fuel economy figures for the new-to-Camaro 2.0L Turbo I4 LTG engine.

  • Huh? How can the manual V8 return lower fuel economy mileage than the automatic? And how can the automatic V8 return 1mpg better highway mileage than the V6 manual? These numbers are pretty good, no doubt! But quite perplexing at the same time... Are you certain that these numbers are not mixed up?

    • Because it's an 8 speed auto vs a 6 speed manual. Due to the more aggressive and closer spaced transmission gears, they were able to use a much taller rear end for lower rpms. Plus only the auto has AFM.

  • Chevrolet's 2016 Camaro SS with 6.2L V8 and 8-speed automatic transmission gets better mileage than a 3.6L V6 with manual transmission possibly for one reason.. how the automatic transmission is programmed although you've got to wonder what the Camaro SS's mileage might be when the 8-speed automatic is driven in manual mode and it's the driver making the shift changes instead of the computer.

  • In many cases anymore the automatics due to the 8 speed, computers and gearing can return better MPG and even performance anymore counter to what it used to be.

Odd but becoming more and more common.

  • It all probably boils down to cruising RPM. The overdrive ratio on the auto could be better than the stick. Another possibility is that the manual may also be paired with a more performance rear gear that increases cruising RPM's.

It would be enlightening to know what those numbers are.

  • I love how everybody is so perplexed. Guys, this isn't rocket science. The car is lighter, and the engine is more efficient, it's got 8 gears instead of 6 and combine that with the new shift points and rear end gearset you get something more fuel efficient.

  • Funny how LS (now LT) engines paired with a Tremec 6 speed have had the same MPG in almost every car for the past 20 years.

LS1 F bodies, the GTOs, Zeta cars, and now 6th Gen Camaro, all have that 25 MPG ceiling.

Does this mean the turbo 4 with the automatic will be the ultimate commuter Camaro? I'm guessing 34 MPG HWY.

    • I think the V6 with the automatic will show the highest highway miles per gallon. with active fuel management it can run is a 2.4 L four-cylinder. it's 20% more displacement then the LTG but the LTG has a 3.27 axel vs 2.77 it's 18% higher Final drive ratio for the V-6. And a higher compression ratio for the V6 11.5 to 1 verses 9.5 to 1 for the LTG.

  • I haven't followed as closely as I intended on the transmissions, anyone know why the 7 speed isn't available on this?
