With crossovers being all the rage, it comes as no surprise that demand for the nipped-and-tucked 2016 Chevy Equinox remains strong. So strong, GM Canada will be running a Saturday overtime shift on the Consolidated Line at the Oshawa Assembly Plant.
So far this year, the Equinox has sold over 20,000 units each month except January.
Alongside the Equinox, the Oshawa Assembly Plant also produces the previous and current gen Chevrolet Impala, Buick Regal, Chevy Camaro and Cadillac XTS.
Despite the increased demand for the Equinox, the Oshawa plant will see “minimal layoffs” with the Camaro ending production at the plant in December of 2015.
For the 2016 model year, the Equinox received a few updates to its exterior, new wheels and new chrome shift buttons and graphics for the instrument panel for its interior.
But, this updated ‘Nox will be short lived — as a completely overhauled Equinox is due for the 2017 model year.

Nothing new here, the Consolidated line has been working consistent overtime for the 5 years the Equinox has been there.
Sales have increased each year since intro of this generation save for GMC.
This will a tough vehicle to follow up.
This vehicle is not exactly class leading right now, so should not be hard to improve on this model. Weight alone is an area which could use the most improvement. It could also use either the 1.5T, 2.0T, or the 2.5 SIDI engine to improve on fuel economy and acceleration. If the Equinox ends up being the same size as a Rav4, that is great.
It may not be class leading in terms of MPG and some options but it has been one of the best sellers in the segment each of the years it has been made. In fact the sales have grown stronger over time vs. declining with age as is the norm.
The vehicle will shrink a little but it will lose more weight than size. The size of this vehicle has proven very popular and I expect the new one will have better interior packaging that will give much more usable space.
This could be my next vehicle if the size and packaging are correct. I hope they hit a home run on the new generation.
