General Motors and its joint venture partners sold a record 3,539,970 vehicles in China in 2014, the equivalent of selling one vehicle every nine seconds, or 9,700 vehicles each day. The results represent a 12 percent increase from the previous sales record set in 2013, when GM China sold 3,160,377 vehicles.
The record sales year was closed out by record December sales, with the division selling 357,375 vehicles in the Chinese domestic market during the month of December 2014, also setting an all-time record for December sales.
What’s even more encouraging is the fact that GM China’s growth rate in 2014 was 4.5 percent higher than the industry overall.
“GM performed well ahead of the overall industry in China, which was up an estimated 7.5 percent last year,” said GM Executive Vice President and President of GM China Matt Tsien. “We experienced especially strong growth in demand in the luxury segment as well as in the SUV and MPV segments.”
Domestic sales at Shanghai GM — The General’s primary joint venture in China responsible for Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac vehicle sales — rose 13.1 percent in 2014 to a record 1,710,025 units. Each one of the three GM brands — Chevy, Buick, and Cadillac — posted sales records.
