After winning Mid Ohio, a chaotic finish gave Corvette Racing just enough misfortune to miss the podium during Sunday’s American Le Mans Series action at Road America in Wisconsin.
A yellow flag denied Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner at least a third place finish, as an incident happened when the No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6.R was in the pit lane. In effect, Gavin (who was driving at the time), was passed by the BMW cars that did not pit during the full course caution. As a result, fourth place was the best the team could get.
The other incident involved the No. 3 C6.R piloted by Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen could not have come at a worse time, as contact from the No. 01 Ferrari spun Magnussen off the track on the final corner, during the final lap. The incident is currently under review by race officials.
Unofficially, Gavin and Milner now lead the GT driver championship by 17 points in the ALMS standings over teammates Magnussen and Milner by a score of 105 to 88. BMW drivers Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller are third with 81 points.
Corvette Racing’s next event is the Baltimore Sports Car Challenge presented by SRT on Saturday, Sept. 1.
