2012 Camaro ZL1 To Start Around $47,000?

Despite production of the 2012 Camaro ZL1 being more than ten months away, Car and Driver is speculating that the supercharged street missile will land a staring price of $47,000, according to its sources. That undercuts the price of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 by nearly $2,500 — as the Blue Oval’s pony commands a higher base price of $49,495. However, the Ford does not get hit with the $1,300 gas-guzzler tax, whereas the Cadillac CTS-V — from which the ZL1 borrows its LSA engine and magnetic suspension system — does.

Contrary to what Car and Driver is saying, Scott Settlemire (a.k.a. the “Fbodfather”), who is currently involved with marketing on the Camaro Team, questions the publication by asking them how they can price the car when it’s not even finished, especially when “pricing is always one of the last things done on a car.”

If we had to throw in a guess, we would wager a starting price somewhere between $47,000 and $50,000.

    • It's a possibility. It's also possible that we won't see any fluctuation, because chances are that those interested in a Corvette Z06 would still be interested in one when the ZL1 launches.

  • The ZL1 will not compete against the Z06 when the latter is $20k more. The ZL1 will compete against the Mustang and the new Dodge 392 and SRT8 models. Looking at a price of $55000 out the door. I may look to a base vette and then supercharge it to get me to this price threshold and 600 hp. Any questions?
