Austin Hill’s No. 21 Chevy Camaro SS team is unstoppable at Atlanta, and they proved it by winning the Xfinity Series race on September 7th, 2024, sweeping both races at the superspeedway-style racetrack in 2024.
Hill led just 12 laps on his way to the win, taking control of the race on Lap 150 of 163 on Saturday. He never looked back, despite threats from further back within the field, taking his third Xfinity Series victory of the year in dominating fashion.
“I’m speechless right now,” Hill said in Victory Lane. “Our Bennett Chevrolet had speed all day, but the handling just was not there the way that I would like. You come to these superspeedway-style events, and you want to have a car that’s trimmed-out. You don’t worry too much about handling.”
He added, “But I thought handling was going to be an issue, and it definitely played a part today. We made some right moves at the right time between my spotter, Derek Kneeland, and me.”
Interestingly, Hill’s race-winning performance was not aided by a fellow NASCAR Chevy driver, but by a Toyota rival. Corey Heim, driver of the No. 26 Toyota TRD Supra, delivered a shot to Hill’s bumper, pushing him ahead of the field and opening the door for his victory. Heim went on to finish fifth, following a slew of Chevys across the stripe.
Parker Kligerman’s No. 48 Camaro finished second, followed by the No. 16 Camaro of AJ Allmendinger and the No. 81 Supra of Chandler Smith.
Justin Allgaier’s No. 7 Camaro wrecked out after a mid-race incident with the No. 00 Ford Mustang Dark Horse of Cole Custer. Both drivers had to retire after sustaining damage in the crash, a damaging blow to both their regular season title hopes. They’re just 34 points apart as the regular season draws to a close, and for now, the razor-thin advantage falls in Allgaier’s favor.
