Automotive supplier Magna has announced that it will provide a North American-based automaker with a specialized EV drive system capable of delivering upwards of 726 kW (974 horsepower) and 8,000 Nm (5,900 pound-feet of torque). The unnamed North America-based OEM will utilize the high-powered Magna eDrive system for one of its “high-end niche vehicle platforms.” The system will be manufactured at Magna’s production facility in Ramos, Mexico. Serial production is slated to kick off the next few years.
Although Magna declined to specify the North American-based automaker set to utilize the new high-powered EV drivetrain, it’s possible that it may be General Motors. That said, GM offers its own brand of all-electric vehicle motors under the GM Ultium Drive brand.
The new Magna eDrive unit is a variant of the company’s 800V eDS Duo system, and incorporates two electric motors, two inverters, and two gearboxes in a single cohesive package. Magna will provide the unnamed North American OEM with the gearbox and housing design, the cooling system, and integration of the e-motors and inverters.

General Motors revealed its new line of GM Ultium Drive Motors in 2021, unveiling three motors total, including a 180-kW front-drive motor, a 255-kW rear- and front-drive motor, and a 62-kW all-wheel drive assist motor. The GM Ultium Drive motors are part of GM’s strategy to leverage a scalable family of motor designs, reducing the number of parts involved in bringing the systems to market.
General Motors recently signed a $18.6 billion deal with LG Chem to source hundreds of thousands of tons of cathode materials for new battery production.

It’s easy to throw tons of Ford lightning motors on a semi and brag about how it can make 900HP for a short period of time. It took a ton of engineering for GM to make the hummer EV and a lot of complexity the fact they don’t want to reveal who it’s with probably means it’s an Addlib system
