1999 Callaway C12 Coupe Previously Owned By Dale Earnhardt Jr. Up For Auction

Under the sexy body panels seen here, this sports car is actually a C5-generation Chevy Corvette, with the entire vehicle reworked in late ‘90s by Callaway Cars to create this – the 1999 Callaway C12 Coupe. An estimated 20 units were produced, but this one is particularly noteworthy as the former property of the legendary NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. Junior acquired the sports car in 2004 before the current owner acquired it in 2015, and now, this 1999 Callaway C12 Coupe is up for grabs in a new online auction.

The first thing to grab you is likely the striking exterior, which was designed by Paul Deutschman. Although it’s based on the C5 Corvette, the 1999 Callaway C12 Coupe only shares the glass, door cut lines, and door handles with the Chevy that originally left the factory. Now, the lines are enhanced with a new body made from carbon-fiber and kevlar, which were painted in Mauritius Blue Mica paint and matched with 19-inch wheels Azev with a silver finish.

Inside, there’s a two-tone gray leather upholstery treatment with carbon fiber trim. There’s also dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, power windows, aluminum pedals, and a Kenwood head unit matched with Bose speakers, not to mention special C12 badging and Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s signature on the headliner.

Making the go is Callaway’s 6.2L SuperNatural V8 engine, which, when new, was rated at 482 horsepower and 466 pound-feet of torque. The V8 is connected to a six-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential. The handling spec was upgraded with Alcon front calipers.

This Callaway C12 Coupe shows just under 25,000 miles on the clock, although Callaway serviced the vehicle in 2022 with rebuilt dampers and an overhaul for the automatic climate control, as well as a replacement alternator.

Now, this 1999 Callaway C12 Corvette Coupe is up for grabs in a new online auction at Bring A Trailer. The current highest bid of 14 placed is set at $80,000, while the auction will end on Sunday, February 11th. The car is offered at no reserve, and includes a Callaway service record. The car is located in Florida.

  1. Automobile interiors from the 1990s seemed to have aged the most poorly.

  3. I used to drool over this car as a late teen back in the late 90’s. I remember seeing it on the cover of Motortrend magazine for the first time and it completely blew my mind. In an era where the McLaren F-1, Ferrari F-50, and Lamborghini Diablo set the bar, i thought this would finally be chevy’s answer to the viper, and it’s ridiculous displacement, which i was no fan of. Fast forward to today and, suffice to say, things haven’t aged so well. Both in thought and offerings. Regardless, I still think she’s beautiful and would not mind at all being handed the keys. Just don’t know if it’s really worth more than a newer vette, sans gawk factor and rarity.
