GMC Sierra EV Named A 2025 North American Truck Of The Year Candidate

The GMC Sierra EV has been named a semifinalist for the upcoming 2025 North American Truck of the Year award, part of the broader North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year (NACTOY) awards. The announcement places the Sierra EV alongside four other semifinalists, including such heavy hitters like the Ford Ranger, Ram 1500, Rivian R1T, and Toyota Tacoma. The award winner will be announced next year in Detroit.

Notably, the Sierra EV and Rivian R1T are both all-electric models, a clear signal of the growing presence of EVs in traditionally ICE-dominated segments. NACTOY president Jeff Gilbert emphasized the diversity of vehicles competing this year, ranging from electric trucks like the Sierra EV to traditional gas-powered trucks, along with hybrid models.

The NACTOY awards are based on an extensive evaluation process. Judges assess a variety of factors in determining a winner, including design, innovation, technology, safety, performance, and value. The NACTOY jury, composed of 50 automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada, will now take the semifinalists through a comparison drive in October. Jurors hail from across print, web, and broadcast media. This next phase will determine which three vehicles will move on as finalists in each category (cars, trucks, and utility vehicles). The results will be unveiled on November 21st in Los Angeles, with the final winners for all three categories announced on January 10th at the Detroit Auto Show.

In addition to the Sierra EV in the truck category, GM is also represented by the Cadillac Celestiq, which is vying for North American Car of the Year, and the Chevy Equinox EV, a semifinalist for North American Utility Vehicle of the Year.

Deliveries of the first production units of the GMC Sierra EV began in August, with the top-tier Denali Edition 1 trim rolling out as the first configuration on offer. Highlights include a 200 kWh GM Ultium battery pack and dual GM Ultium Drive motors, the combination of which yields 754 horsepower and 785 pound-feet of torque. The GM BT1 platform provides the underpinnings, while production takes place at the GM Factory Zero plant in Michigan.
