EVgo And FLO Charging Networks To Expand NACS Connection

General Motors, along with rival Ford, has been making headlines as of late following new arrangements with Tesla to utilize the latter’s vast Supercharger network. In response to these recent announcements, two EV charging companies – EVgo and FLO – have announced that they will begin integrating North American Charging Standard (NACS) connectors into their respective charging networks.

“EVgo first deployed integrated Tesla connectors in 2020, and with the recently announced expansion of the number of automakers using the NACS connector, we are excited to announce that we will also be integrating NACS connectors on the EVgo network in future deployments as well as on some existing chargers,” EVgo CEO Cathy Zoi was quoted as saying. “With the shift to EV ubiquity under way, growing demand for charging means there will need to be hundreds of thousands of new fast chargers deployed in the U.S. over the next decade, and we know that customers select chargers based on location, convenience, and ease of use.”

This new development comes as General Motors electric vehicles will switch to the NACS connector by 2025, thus necessitating the need to facilitate these upcoming all-electric vehicles. In the interim, GM EVs will ship with adapters to plug into the NACS charging stations.

“FLO welcomes initiatives to standardize charging hardware in North America because we believe it will help eliminate confusion for EV drivers,” FLO Chief Product Officer Nathan Yang was quoted as saying. “Ultimately, the increased adoption of the NACS standard relates both to its widespread use by EV drivers and the reliability of stations that currently offer NACS.”

For reference, this new GM-Tesla deal will allow General Motors EV drives to access 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across North America, while also saving the Detroit-based automaker up to $400 million in the process. With access set to be granted by early next year, The General is currently working on integrating the Tesla Supercharger infrastructure into its infotainment and mobile apps, thus making it easier for drivers to utilize the charging network.
